Notre-Dame de Nanteuil

I only rarely take flash photos, but I took a couple inside a church in Montrichard a few days ago. I was using my old Panasonic ZS1 camera. I stopped to see the church on the spur of the moment, just because I've driven past it hundreds of times over the past 15 years but had never seen the interior.

It was very dark and cold inside the church. The weather outside was cloudy and gray. Using the flash was about my only option, and I couldn't really see what I was taking pictures of.

I did take some pictures of stained glass windows, and then I went outside and photographed some of the stone carvings along the roofline of the church. I don't know why it's called Notre-Dame de Nanteuil, but it's been here since the 12th century.

Here's the exterior of the church. It sits near the Montrichard train station, a little way outside of the center of the town. This exterior photo didn't require using a flash, of course. I'm posting these photos in large sizes. If you click or tap on them a couple of times you can see enlargements.

  1. At first, on the second photo, I thought it was JP2 with mother Theresa, the two most unrewarding new saints!

    1. It looks like JP2 to me, but I don't know about the female figure.

    2. English as a second language is tricky; I probably should have said unrewarded. Sorry.

It is JP2, all right. The female figure is the Virgin.

    3. That's what I thought. So are you saying that you think JP2 and Mother Theresa are not qualified to be saints, or that they were too long neglected before being beatified?

    4. I am really sorry for the confusion. What I meant is that in my opinion they were vastly unqualified to be rewarded the sainthood!

    5. The word you were looking for is "unworthy" I think.

    6. Yep, that's the one. Thank you.

  2. I like a blond madonna lol. I do love that light blue silky drape she's wearing. Sainthood is tricky stuff...

  3. Thanks for these photos :) I always enjoy your church photos, inside and out.
I just got a chance to read your pimiento cheese post-- I did not know that it was a home-made spread type of thing. I'm pretty sure that I remember hearing about it when I was young, in New Jersey. Trying to remember how and when, I remember, now, that when my mom used to sometimes buy pre-made finger sandwich trays for bridge club at our house (which didn't happen that often!), that one of the spreads was pimiento cheese. I never would have thought about it again, if you hadn't written about it yesterday. It's cool to know all about it, now!

    1. We Americans assume that so many things — mayonnaise, pimento cheese, ranch dressing — can't be made at home. I always thought that, until I came here and started making my own dressings, bagels, etc. Do you think you can buy pimento cheese in the supermarkets there in St. Louis. You probably can. Or you can make it. It's simple, especially if you have a food processor for grating the cheese. Make a half recipe if it's just for two, though.

  4. ...your photo (The Virgin Mother of God and Pope John Paul II) reminds me of FATIMA...there is a painting that depicts the same auspice...recalling how Mary protected the "Fatima Pope" when he was shot on the Feast Day of Our Lady of Fatima on May 13,1981.
