Turkey, turkey broth, and crossed paws

I took Tasha out for her walk yesterday morning because Walt was feeling, well, under the weather. His cold is still in the development phase. Mine is winding down. Walt walked Tasha yesterday afternoon, when it was warmer and slightly sunny. This morning it's — guess what — raining again, so maybe I'll go on the walk. On our regular schedule, it's my morning to do it, anyway.

I took the photo above because Tasha was sitting with her front paws crossed, as she often does. As soon as she saw the camera, she uncrossed them. Dang. One day she'll cooperate with the photographer...

Before going out for the morning walk, I have to get a turkey in the oven. It's one we bought during the holiday period when they were on sale and have kept in the freezer until now. I put shallots, garlic, bay leaves, thyme, salt (gros sel), black peppercorns, and allspice berries inside to flavor the turkey as it roasts. Then I rubbed the breast and thighs with olive oil and sprinkled on some smoked paprika and hot chili pepper.

In fact, yesterday for lunch we had turkey-barley soup that we made a couple of months ago from a holiday-time turkey carcass. It was delicious and comforting.

  1. Unlike you, I very seldom remember what I had eaten at a given restaurant, but the case in point is a marvellously delicious beef-barley soup that I had at a restaurant on Route 10 in Van Dorn, Texas, while crossing country with Frank from California to Virginia. It was so good, that the next time we went through Texas, I made sure we stopped in Van Dorn and had diner at that same restaurant. Did they have a new management and/or a new chef?, but the diner we had that second time was really nothing to write home about. Life is tough!

    1. Turkey barley soup, along with beef barley soup, are classics. We have turkey barley left for lunch tomorrow, and then we have another block of it frozen to thaw later for another meal.

Have you had any electric outages because of the windy weather in the DC area?

    2. No, nothing, fortunately, since no electricity, no heating! This windy event is on its way out as I write.

  3. Tasha is photogenic and so are those shallots. I like barley in soups. Glad CHM kept his power yesterday.
