Loire levels by season

I slept peacefully, but when I got up this morning my left arm, into which the Moderna shot was administered yesterday morning, felt extremely sore. And my back and shoulders seemed unusually stiff. Sitting here in front of my laptop, I have watery eyes and a lot of congestion. I'm coughing. I just felt a distinct chill up and down my spine. Are these side effects from the Moderna vaccine, or am I just feeling my age? It's pretty cold outside (+3ºC), but the house is warm. With any luck, this will be a quiet day. It's Walt's turn to walk out in the vineyard with Natasha this morning. I'm planning to make a beef and broccoli stir fry for lunch. It's a quick and easy recipe.

This is what the Loire looked like at Amboise on the same July day when I took the photos at Blois that I posted yesterday. There's as much mud as water visible in the riverbed.

Here's what the bridge at Amboise looked like on a June day a few years earlier. Notice how much of the stonework is visible, and how much headroom there is under the bridge arches.

Here's the Amboise bridge on a sunny, cold December day (photos above and below) not long after we came to live here. A huge volume of water was moving down the Loire towards the river's mouth from its source about 450 miles distant.

In December 2003, the Loire rose 4.5 meters (nearly 15 feet) above its normal level. In 1856, it rose 8 meters (26 feet) above that level and big parts of the town were flooded.

I've been up for almost two hours now and I'm feeling about the same. Maybe it's time to lie down for a few minutes. My head aches and my shoulders are still very stiff. I'm not complaining, just reporting. Okay, moaning just a little.

  1. Sorry to hear how you feel and hope these reactions to the vaccine will disappear very soon. Maybe some rest will do the trick.
I think my shot was Moderna too. I had zero reactions. But, of course, I survived the first wave of Covid-19!

  2. I feel better at this hour. Meanwhile, I have a broken filling, so I made an appointment with the dentist this morning for next week. Happy New Year to me.

    1. It is the dentist in Luçay-le-Mâle if I’m not mistaken.

  3. Hi Ken -- Sorry to see that you're having these side effects, but they seem pretty much like what I had after my Moderna shots, and they are pretty par for the course. For me, they lasted pretty much all one day, and by noon the next day I felt completely normal. I did go to bed and just sleep it off, though... let yourself do that.

    1. I see that in my future for this afternoon, before my walk with Tasha.

    1. I feel better now, after a good lunch. My shot arm is still sore but my shoulders have loosened up a little bit. My head stopped aching. I'm not coughing any more. I wonder when the fourth shot will become de rigueur.

  5. Glad you are feeling a little better. Moderna seems to pack a bit of a punch. I hope you have enough energy for the dog walk. Tomorrow you should feel better. Sorry about the broken tooth, it goes with these "golden years" lol.

  6. The Loire photos are quite interesting- rivers are living things with so much variety in their flows.

    1. My reaction to the Moderna booster was worse than my reaction to the first two shots of AstraZeneca, but it lasted only about 24 hours.

  10. Your symptoms sound like what a lot of others are reporting after the third shot, for both Moderna and Pfizer. Aspirin helps a bit, and they're generally short-lived. Better than the 'rona, though.
