I have 10 photos of Rocamadour left, so I'm posting them as a slideshow. I took these on April 30, 2006, when we spent a few days in the Sarlat/Cahors area (Périgord et Quercy provinces) in SW France, about four hours south of Saint-Aignan. The slide show runs for slightly less than two minutes.
We had lunch in Rocamadour the day we were there. The village was very crowded with tourists like us, especially since April 30 is the eve of the big May 1 ("labor day") holiday in France. April 30 fell on a Sunday in 2006. Two days later we stopped in Collonges-la-Rouge on our way back to Saint-Aignan. Collonges is another major attraction in this part of France, and you'll see why when I post some photos of the town tomorrow....
Very nice slide. I love roman tiles! They're typical of Southern France.
ReplyDeleteCompletely O/T. Having a whopping 10-gram Grape Jelly every morning with stale WonderBread toast made me think about the vines in your yard. Did they ever bear fruit?
DeleteWe always get a few bunches of grapes off those vines, but I think they are too shaded by the apple trees to produce much, and the grapes aren't very good. We've talked about ripping the vines out, but we do like the leaves for making dolmas (feuilles de vigne farcies).
DeleteI love seeing this Rocamadour slide show !
ReplyDeleteReally enjoyed seeing this slide show, and it has me adding Rocamadour to my someday list. We learned about all the obvious places in school: Carcassone, chateaux of the Loire and Mont Saint-Michel. But places like Rocamadour and the Dordogne never were on the list, nor was Strasbourg, e.g. Love the terra cotta tile roofs; I'm sure they have a long lifespan.
ReplyDeleteWhat a place! The reason that I ended up in that area, for my 1986 trip, was because of Smithsonian magazine. In the back of the magazine in one issue, there was mention of a Smithsonian-led tour to France, and one of the places it mentioned was Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, which I had never heard of. We ended up getting a Michelin guide for the area, stayed in Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, and toured around the area -- I hadn't really heard of any of the places that we went to, before that. Wonderful trip. Thanks for the memories!
ReplyDeleteWalt and I first went to St-Cirq and Rocamadour in 1995, I think it was. We were staying in a gîte in Puy-lÉvêque, down the Lot from Cahors.
DeleteLoved this. Youtube also suggested some other Rocamadour videos, including this drone footage (includes Sarlat and Carcassone): https://youtu.be/2zrU93RQWkE?t=95
ReplyDeleteThanks, Mike, I'll have a look at those videos.
