Except for the little jobs and touch-ups that we need to do, our 2019 home improvement is completed. The plumber finished his work about 10 days ago, and the building contractor came in at the beginning of the week and finished his.

The room itself is pretty typical for a 50-year-old French house. It was not a retro-fit but was purpose-built, I think. It's comfortable because it has not only a toilet but also a small sink with hot water and a radiator. The thing that's unusual about it is its length — it measures only about three feet wide, but it's nearly 10 feet long. It feels a little like a hallway leading nowhere.

Yesterday Walt did some touch-up painting in the downstairs "bathroom" — half-bath, "loo", WC, cabinet, petit coin, "throne room" — and it looks good in my opinion. We painted the walls blue many years ago, and the blue paint dried to be a much deeper and brighter blue than we expected.

Besides the new "wall-mounted" toilet, we also got a new rug and a new mirror.

The new mirror sort of matches the little bamboo storage cabinet that we bought for "the littlest room in the house" three or four years ago.

We might decide to re-paint the room in the relatively near future, but for the time being we'll live with it as it is now.

Most importantly, the new upstairs WC is also basically finished. It's been functional for about 10 days. All that's left to do is put up the toilet paper holder, a mirror, and a couple of other things on the walls.

  1. It looks really good. I love the mirror! (I think I want one just like it!) And the rug seems to make the room feel less long and narrow, at least to me.

    1. After reading your comment, I went to find the same mirror on Amazon in the U.S. They sell it, but at a pretty high price compared to what we paid for it from Amazon in France — 30 euros vs. $123! It must be an imported product in the U.S.

    2. Thank you for the link....If I get an amazon credit card I could have this for $43.00. I am thinking about it. Just thinking.

  2. Love that rug and mirror. The wooden toilet seat goes well with the other wood pieces for a nice look. Maybe the mirror cost is what's to come in the USA thanks to new tariffs. Ugh!

    1. We were lucky with the rug, because it was sold with the warning that every rug is unique, so there is no choice of color or pattern. This one happened to work with our current color scheme.

  3. It's amazing what some nicely arranged pictures, a rug and a mirror can do to a space. Looks very nice and comfy.

  4. That bamboo cabinet looks nice, and very useful. I like the mirror and pictures. I realize you really can't call a bathroom "pretty" or "charming" but it looks very, um, pleasant.
As for tariffs, brace yourselves. Something that cost me 2.99 euros in a French pharmacy last year was listed at more than $15 on Amazon in the US.

  5. Oh, wait. The mirror in the US Amazon link says dimensions are 70 x 50, so it's much bigger than yours.

    1. No, the two mirrors are the same size — in centimeters, it's 70 x 50 x 2 (that's 28" tall x 20" wide, approximately).

  6. Oh! I forgot to read your blogs today! LOL I'm glad I didn't miss this view of the updated half bath/powder room-- it's funny that I didn't realize it before, but it's because of that length, that it doesn't feel like most French toilet rooms, which, to me, usually seem to be made to just be the size of a closet (not a complaint, just an observation), and yours is bigger, so it feels more like a room... that's my theory, and I'm sticking to it :) I LOVE the wall color, and am always so impressed with how you and Walt have such a good eye for juxtaposing colors and textures. I LOVE the new mirror, as well. The new rug picks up the colors... it's just a really nice look.

    1. I know what you mean, Judy, about the "water closets" that really are closets. In ours, you don't have your knees pressed against the door when you are sitting on the throne. And we were lucky with the rug, as I said to Evelyn above. Lucky to have found that mirror too. Walt's the one with the eye for color coordination.

    1. We are happy, especially since Walt did the finish work and touch-up painting. Life is good.

  8. Oh, drat. Done in (again) by the dreaded decimals. Sorry about that.
