Étretat : ses falaises et sa plage

Just 40 miles down the côte d'Albâtre from Dieppe, and about 40 miles northeast of Rouen, is the famous town of Étretat (pop. 1250), with some of the most picturesque white chalk cliffs on the Channel coast. We were lucky in early June 2003, just three days after arriving with our dog from the U.S. to settle down here in France, to be able to enjoy a beautiful warm day in Étretat with bright sun and no wind. We had lunch in a beach-side restaurant, outdoors. Without having been asked, the waiter brought a bowl of water for the dog. After lunch we went on the high ground north of town and took pictures. Here are some of them.

  1. In the mid-thirties, my grand mother had a subscription to an interesting magazine called Je Sais Tout, I know everything, in which I was reading installments of a detective story by Maurice Leblanc called L’Aiguille creuse, The hollow needle, into which a recurring character in Leblanc’s books, Arsène Lupin, gentleman-cambrioleur, staches what he steals here and there.
This fictitious hollow needle is the one in Étretat! Photo #7
Maurice Leblanc’s “Art Nouveau” house in Étretat is called Le Clos Lupin.
    Excellent photos.

    1. Thank you Evelyn. When I wrote my comment, I didn’t have the slightest idea that Maurice Leblanc’s work was on Netflix. Did you get to see l’Aiguille creuse yet?
Leblanc and Gaston Leroux, the author of the Fantom of the Opera, were two writers of mystery fiction. I’ll try to get on line l’Aiguille creuse the same way I got the Fantom.

  5. Interestingly, my first trip to France happened in June, 2003 also. I was with my daughters French class trip and it started in the Rouen , Normandy area. I wish we could have seen Entretat. Your pictures are amazing!
