Another town, another church

These are some photos I took inside a church in a town less than 45 minutes from Rouen by car. The town itself dates back to Gallo-Roman times, which means it's nearly 2000 years old. It has suffered mightily over the centuries, including durking the Second World War. It's not a famous for its church as it is for something else entirely. I'm posting these photos mostly for the colors and the details.

  1. If I’m not mistaken this town is known for its excellent heart-shaped cheese.
The colors in these stained-glass windows are amazing, especially the unusual purple of the archbishop of Rouen’s robe in the first photo.
Seven years later, I had lunch with my niece in a restaurant across from the church when we were on our way from Bayeux to Amiens. Good memories!

  2. Colors, colors, vibrant colors... nice to wake up to this morning.
I enjoyed yesterday's post about Deauville -- I have never been, and don't know that I've really seen any images before. I just always remember an interview with Arletty, in which she says that, when she was just starting as a model, she was told to be at some location in Paris for a job... and she said she couldn't be there. They asked why, and she said, "Je vais à Deauville." and, she recounts that the employer's response was, "Vous allez à Deauville? Alors, vous y resterez!" Ha! This is from a wonderful hour-long recorded interview that Radio France did with her once. I bought the cassette of it back in the 1980s.

    2. Yes, Judy, thanks. I wonder if that interview is available on the internet.

    3. I've looked and looked, but haven't ever been able to find it available online, Ken. I was able to transfer the cassette version to a digital version, a number of years ago, though.

  3. The first photos, with the crowns on top of the windows, are lovely. I'm also partial to the lion in photo number two. I didn't know who Arletty was but enjoyed reading about her. I like her quote "If my heart is french my *** is international." Ha!

    1. She was in a leading role in Les enfants du paradis. It might be in youtube. Great 1940s film.

    2. Thanks for that quote, D. I don't think I'd heard of it before (but the memory is not what it used to be). Arletty's most famous quote, I think, is the "atmosphère" line from the film Hôtel du Nord.
