Les maisons d'Oléron

This two-minute slideshow will give you an idea about what the houses on the Île d'Oléron look like. Notice that a lot of them had closed shutters when we were there in late May 2008 — they must be summer places (résidences secondaires).

For whatever reason, the "looping" no longer seems to work when I embed a video into a Blogger post. Either YouTube or Blogger has changed something, I guess. Looping (replaying the video over and over again) also doesn't work with older slideshows where it used to work. Sigh....

  1. Never a dull moment. New, improved?

Another interesting slideshow. It seems most of these neat houses are résidences secondaires. Excellent photos.
The pink flowering plant on the wall is a Valerian (Valériane), also known in French as lilas d'Espagne.

    1. We had those flowering Valerian plants in northern California.

  2. My first trip to France was to go as an "au pair" girl for the summer to a family on l'Ile d'Oléron in 1976. I remember the hollyhocks, vineyards, melon in Pineau, the pine forests and beaches on the Atlantic side, and the kind family. Time for another visit. Perhaps we'll stay in your former gîte. Thank you for these lovely photos.

  3. Beautiful photos -- so much color, mixed with the old stone, makes for a very scenic treat. That bright blue fence on the house with the bright blue shutters, was a treat!

  4. One of your best slideshows! The houses are well cared for and beautiful. Lewis and I got our second Moderna shot yesterday. We have malaise and slept poorly, but starting to feel a little better now. I think it's a 24 hour phenomena. When will you get the vaccine?

    1. Evelyn, sorry you didn't feel well after your vaccine shot. A friend had the same thing happen to him, and now he seems OK. As for me, I nad my two shots without any malaise or anything. Maybe because I've had covid-19 earlier in the year and recovered from it?

    2. I'm going to see my GP on Monday morning and I'll see if he knows when we might start getting vaccinated. The news on TV says something like three million people have been vaccinate in France so far, and a million of those have had their two shots.
