Un gîte rural dans la Somme pour nos vacances du printemps

Something to look forward to — we have reserved a vacation rental, un gîte rural, using the Gîtes de France web site,  for a week's vacation next April in the département de la Somme in Picardie (northern France). My thanks to "elgee" who comments here regularly and who actually found this gîte for us and sent me a link after I mentioned a while back that I was having trouble finding a gîte near the Baie de Somme that would let us bring our dog, Tasha, along. Here's a photo of the house.

It's located in a hamlet very near the estuary of the Somme river and only a mile from a town with a population of about 2,500 and several supermarkets and markets. The Baie de Somme, on the English Channel (la Manche), is about a five-hour drive from Saint-Aignan, where we live. As you can see from the map below,  the city of Amiens, with its fantastic cathedral, is only 35 miles away, as is the Channel port of Boulogne-sur-Mer. Dieppe in Normandie is just 30 miles down the coast. The red upside-down "tear-drop" marks the spot.

The house has two bedrooms and a WC (half-bath) upstairs, as well as another WC and a separate bathroom with tub and shower on the ground floor (just as our house in Saint-Aignan does now). Central heating is included in the rental price, as are the end-of-stay cleaning fee and Wifi for Internet access. There's a washer and dryer as well as a dishwasher and a television. The yard is large and fenced in. The owners have a little dog that they say Tasha might enjoy playing with. So it all sounds pretty nice. The price for a week's stay is about 500 euros. Here's a slideshow showing the interior of the house.

We're hoping for good weather in April and looking forward to sightseeing as well a walks on beaches and dinners of local seafood. Planning the trip and researching the area will get us through the winter.

  1. In 1939, while vacationing at cousins in Brighton (pronounced brick-ton) near Cayeux, I crossed the baie de Somme in a small boat from Le Hourdel to Le Crotoy and back. That was the first time I ever crossed a large body of water. It was memorable.

    1. P.S. There is a saying in French that says, Qui n'a pas vu Cayeux, n'a rien vu d'affreux. My recollection of Cayeux is very poor, almost nil!

    2. Sounds like we should avoid Cayeux-l'Affreux. I hope Le Crotoy is a nicer place, with crotte as its root word.

  2. This looks and sounds as if it has lots of charm. Anticipation is a great thing!

  3. Oh, great! I'm so glad that Tasha is a happy traveler, so that you and Walt can do these vacations now. I love planning a trip-- glad to know you'll be having fun doing that. (Also, thanks for yet another excellent gîte example for my unit on vacation lodging in France! I still show that great place you stayed in with Evelyn and her husband... that one was on the trip to Salers, I think?)

    1. That stay near Salers was 10 years ago, in 2009. Can you believe it? I can't. I would really like to go back to that place. Or further south into the Aveyron. I also remember fondly the old farmhouse we rented in Le Perche, near Mortagne, in 2011.

  4. You will undoubtedly research Arras, which is not far! The architecture even though rebuilt is a small Bruxelles! I really enjoyed visiting there and the saturday marché where I purchased some capris that I still get compliments on! Looks like a cozy gite at a decent price and a fabulous location. Amiens has the cathedrale and musée of Jules Verne are places to visit that I recommend as well!

  6. I'm so pleased you've been able to book it and take Tasha along - glad to have been of help! Something totally different: if either you or Walt like playing with your photos a bit (in post processing), there's a nice freebie up on https://www.giveawayoftheday.com/ . Only today and you have to install it before the offer disappears off the site, so best to install it rightaway. I downloaded and installed it without any problems. It works a treat - there a quite a few options, so I downloaded a manual as well. It also comes with a Lightroom plug-in - very nice!

  8. A very attractive gite! Thanks to Mary for the heads up on Arras. I did not know of that lovely town. I was going to suggest a drive to nearby Bruxelles where you can go chocolate crazy at Wittamer, Pierre Marcolini, Leonidas, Mary, etc. around the Place du Grand Sablon.

  9. I went to Arras in 2011, and nearby Cambrai too. We might go again next April. I also think I want to go see Abbeville, which I know nothing about.
