Vitraux de la cathédrale St-Étienne de Bourges [2]

The Cadogan Loire guidebook points out that the Cathédrale Saint-Étienne de Bourges was the first gothic cathedral ever built south of the Loire River. As at the cathedral in Chartres to the north, Bourges cathedral
“spectacularly demonstrates the engineering and visual possibilities of the flying buttress,
which allow for much glass, and hence light, for the interior.”

The Michelin Green Berry-Limousin guidebook gives the stained-glass at Bourges three stars. « Avec son ensemble de vitraux anciens du 12e au 17e siècle, la cathédrale [de Bourges] abrite l'une des plus belles collections de vitraux
de France
», the guide says — one of the most beautiful collections of stained-glass windows in France...

  1. I’ll repeat myself, these stained-glass windows are spectacular, enhanced as they are by the excellence of your photos and the bright sun outside.

  2. The green window looks modern. Imagine what amazement a person would have felt walking into the majesty of this cathedral with the light shining in the windows!

  3. The Gothic architecture in #2 and #8 is wonderful. Given the perspective in some of these windows, they must be 17th century.

  4. The colors and workmanship of those windows are spectacular, and your photos are brilliant, although I'm always faintly bemused by how much of religious art seems to involve inflicting grave bodily harm upon others.

    1. I guess it's all about the history of human beings.
