Zooming in on Sancerre

I've mentioned Sancerre several times in recent posts. Walt and I have been there a couple of times. We drove through and stopped in October 2014, on our way back to Saint-Aignan from Burgundy. And then CHM and I drove over to Sancerre together in May 2015. Sauvignon Blanc white wines and Pinot Noir red and rosé wines are made there.

Sancerre's wines and landscapes rival those of Chablis and Irancy, but it's not quite in Burgundy. It's a hilltop town (pop. 1,400 or so) on the west side (left bank) of the Loire river, across from Pouilly-sur-Loire, which puts it in the Berry province and about two hours from Saint-Aignan by car. Below is a series of photos zooming in on Sancerre.

  1. Didn’t you take this photo from the road above Chavignol, of crottin fame, that we can see in the bottom right in the first photo?

  3. Ken, we just love that little hillside town, both the wine and the old center streets. Your posts are really making us miss our trips to France! Hopefully spring 2022! For now I take daily trips to the French countryside thanks to Living the Life!

    1. Walt and I have enjoyed visits to Sancerre since the '90s. You'll let us know if you get back to France. Where in France do you want to go?

    2. Ken, we hope to take a grand tour next time, no kids, just J and I. Of course we will head back to Varennes for a visit, but then after touring favorite spots in France we hope to spend 6 weeks during early spring traveling through Western Europe, plans have not been finalized yet. Hoe to see you and W then!

    1. Next time Evelyn. Sancerre isn't very far from Saint-Aignan, and would make a good day trip for a sunny day.
