Picturesque, serene, medieval Noyers

Possibly the most picturesque and carefully maintained medieval villages in northern Burgundy is called Noyers-sur-Serein. It was a very short drive (10 minutes) south of Môlay, the village were were staying in. The population of Noyers (pronounced nwah-'yehr) is about 600, and there are about 500 housing units in the village. Seventy-eight houses in the village are officially listed as monuments historiques, most of them dating back to the 15th century. A third of the houses in Noyers are weekend or vacation places for their owners. Fifteen houses there are for sale right now. Today I'll just post a few photos I took there nearly seven years ago.

  2. Love the half-timbered houses. Especially the lighter colored wood in #5.

  3. We stopped in Noyers 25 years ago, then again 8 years ago. It doesn't look like it's changed a bit. Beautiful as ever.

  4. Those clock towers were useful in the 15th century, now we have access to the world happenings on our wrist and in our pockets with smart phones. I really enjoy seeing these beautiful villages, especially when the old walls are still there.

    1. I'm starting to think I might like to retire (again) to that part of France.

    2. I'm not sure you're allowed to retire from retirement. Plus, you do live in a very nice area also.

    3. I've come to the conclusion that we have been just semi-retired for the last 18 years. I've done more back-breaking physical labor over these years than I had ever done before — most of it in the garden and yard, but some in the house, sanding and painting. I feel full retirement beckoning. I'd like to live in a place without stairs one day.

    4. I can understand what you're saying, but I don't think you're the kind of person who could sit around and watch TV all day and do nothing. That's how my father spent most of his last years living in Las Vegas, with occasional trips to the casino to "invest" his money.
As to stairs, that's certainly understandable. I just thought about it and realized that every place we've lived for the last 40 years has had stairs. It doesn't bother me too much yet, but I'm sure it will.
