Picturesque things I saw in Salers in 2009

It was September 2009 and we were in Salers with our friends Evelyn, Lewis, and Linda.

We had arrived the day before and were staying in a gîte rural in a village just a few minutes' drive south of Salers, which is one of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France.

The gîte we stayed in was a huge old stone house with a couple of bathrooms, three (or was it four?) bedrooms, a big kitchen, and an enormous dining room — more about that later.

I hope it's not presumptuous of me to ask you all to supply your own commentary this morning.

I don't have time. I want to make a batch of hamburger buns. I also need to hang a big load of wet laundry out on the outdoor clothesline to dry, partly because it's supposed to be a hot, sunny day.

And I have a cooked lamb shoulder in the slow-cooker that I need to take out and make into "pulled lamb" — that's Kentucky-style lamb barbecue. That's what the buns are for.

  1. That is the best weathervane ever, in picture #1. I'm going to pretend all us commenting diaspora on your blog are able to join you in the back yard for pulled lamb and summer weather. And cocktails.

  6. I remember that your Salers trip was one of the first after I stumbled upon your blog. I use some photos of yours, of area scenery, cows, and the gîte, in my class :)

    1. Thanks for letting me know about using those photos. I so wished back in the 1970s, '80s, and early '90s in Champaign-Urbana and then in San Francisco that I had access to recent and varied photos and information about France. No internet! Things are so different now.

  7. The last photo is a doozy! I just love those 2CV's! There are a few driving around our city - even a couple of the mini trucks. I was shopping and the owner of one came out and I talked to him. He offered to sell his bright egg-yolk yellow mini truck for only $1800, as I recall!

What can I contribute to the bar-b-q. Oh, and thanks for the reminder, our temps will be in the low 90's and I need to wash my bathroom rugs and get them out to dry on my deck railing!

Salers hadn't been in my knowledge bank, another interesting place to put on my list! Merci, Ken!

P.S. I didn't think you would be willing to return to "working" with a video, but I wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your food postings!

    1. If I knew how to work on car engines, I'd love to have a 2CV or an R4 (Renault). But I don't, and I'm afraid it would be a big hassle to keep one running. French neighbors just down the hill from us have a beige 2CV that looks like it's in excellent condition. They are my age or older, and I've wondered for years if they will ever decide to sell it. Anyway, I have a 20-year-old Peugeot, and I'm determined to keep it going until it's 25 years old and qualifies as a classic car.

    2. BIG error: $18,000 not $1800! I would have bought it for that price!

    2. I'm sure everything will go fine with your eye surgery. So many people have it at our age or older. MA did, and she said it was great to be able to see clearly again.

    3. All is well so far. My eye patch is a clear one, the better to see you with lol. Cataract surgery has changed so much. Our bodies are miraculous in their ability to heal.
