Le gîte rural à Saint-Chamant

Here's a short slideshow with photos I took mostly inside the house we rented in Saint-Chamant (Cantal, Auvergne, central France). The Plus Beaux Villages called Salers and Tournemire are both within 10 miles, and there's a château in Saint-Chamant too. We were five people, and we rented this house for 300 euros (about $340 U.S. at today's exchange rate).

The house is old-fashioned-looking inside but it's very spacious. It has all the conveniences: a good kitchen, a huge living room and equally huge dining room downstairs, as well as three bedrooms, two bathrooms (one downstairs and one upstairs). I didn't take pictures of the bedrooms or bathrooms, but you can see them on this web site. Yes, the house is still for rent at prices comparable to what we paid in 2009. It costs more in high season, but not much more — about $400. Have a look.

Bob R., I'm curious to know if you recognize the place from your stay in Saint-Chamant years ago.

  1. The Henri II style furniture in the dinning room was in fashion in the late 1800s.

    This house seems very comfortable.

Contrary to the previous one, this slide downloaded very fast!

  2. Photos make the trip come back to my memory. I had forgotten that blue rental car. Now I remember the beautiful tomatoes you brought along from your garden I think. Your photos are better than the one on the gite site.

    1. I know I took tomatoes to the gîte we had in Le Perche in 2011, but I don't remember about Le Cantal. If I took tomatoes down there, I'm sure they were from our vegetable garden.

  3. It's been 25 years since we were there, and a lot could have been done to the house, but I have my doubts that this is the same place. I wish Google Street View would show the whole village so I could see if there's a house that looks somewhat similar on the outside.

    1. I agree that the lack of full street view of Saint-Chamant is a pain. Could your gîte have been this one?

    2. No, that doesn't look like it. We might have one photo of the gite in my wife's photo book (remember those?). I'll take a look at it.

    3. It could well be that the gîte you stayed in all those years ago is no longer rented out as a gite.

  4. Very nice house! I think I need to rent it for a month, better yet I’d like to rent it from now until November 4th. If only Europe would let us in but I don’t blame them for keeping crazy Americans out. Sorry, I’ll get off my soapbox now.

    1. I know what you mean about not being in the U.S. from now until Nov. 4, but sadly, I think you have no choice. Even if the EU said you could come in, would you want to spent 12 hours in airports and on airplanes? I wouldn't.

    2. I agree with you Ken. One thing that would keep me from flying is the mask wearing requirement. I know they are useful, and I wear them whenever I'm in a store or other indoor location. I find it very uncomfortable to breathe when wearing one, and my glasses fog up. But it's only 15 minutes or so, and I can deal with that. But an 8 hour flight?!!
