Un pic de chaleur

J'en connais qui vont être heureux aujourd'hui. Certain people I know will be very happy with today's weather. Some people like and are used to hellish temperatures.

Yesterday our high temperature was in the upper 80s F. We recorded 30.5ºC on our thermometer, and that's already pretty hot. This morning at 6:30, our thermometer is still reading 21.5ºC, or about 71ºF. That would be a nice — and not abnormal — high temperature for a summer day here in Saint-Aignan.

Instead, MétéoFrance and France 2 télévision are predicting a high of 39ºC in Tours today. The city of Tours is about 60 km/35 mi. west of Saint-Aignan. Oh, 39º is over 100ºF. 102.2ºF, to be precise.

The sunrise at 6:00 this morning

This is not a canicule, or an official heat wave, they are telling us. For it to qualify as a canicule — "dog days" — daytime and nighttime temperatures have to be well above normal for at least three days in a row.

What we're having today is just a pic de chaleur — a heat spike. A mini-heat wave of short duration. Hot air coming up from the Sahara. Temperatures are supposed to plummet again tomorrow and on Wednesday, with rain coming in off the Atlantic Ocean. We need the rain, still.

We don't have air-conditioning at our house, but I'll be in the car during the hottest part of the day. We do have AC in the little Peugeot. I have an afternoon appointment with a cardiologist in Blois. It's a first visit, purely for informational and preventive purposes. In other words, I feel fine, except for the heat.

  1. Yeah! It is lovely! LOL!
Yesterday, here in the Bordeaux region, it was 36°C and, lo and behold, it was hot. Are you surprised? Close to the Dordogne it was very humid so it felt like 200°F!
Will be back in Paris today where they're expecting close to 100°F. Mini heat wave, indeed!

  2. It's hot in Provence, too. I love it! Our little house does have AC, which used to be rare for France, but we haven't turned it on yet.

  3. It was hot here in Derbyshire yesterday - 25°C !!!
Yes, for us that's almost unbearable - yet when we are chez nous we find 25° pleasantly warm and don't feel uncomfortable until we get over 30°!! I suppose that's the difference between being on holiday (or retired maybe) and having to get to work and rush about as normal.
I hope it's good news chez the cardiologist.
And I LOVE the new header photo.

  4. We don't have AC, but we have a fan on all night to create a bit of a breeze for us and The Dog. Not the time for strenuous work in the garden -- just long cool drinks. Let the Wimbledon players do all the running around!

  5. I guess those levels of weather are something we are used to here in Australia but as you know we are now in mid winter with between 5 and 8 degrees celcius.
Hope your tests go well Ken - you remind me that I should do the same.

  6. CHM, I was also thinking of Starman, who is in Paris this week. He, I think, likes hot weather too. At 11:20 a.m. here in Saint-Aignan, the temperature is already 29ºC. L'enfer!

Meredith, it's not supposed to be as hot in Provence today as here in Touraine.

Jean, I too think 25ºC is hot (enough). We are well beyond that at this moment.

Lesley, Ginny, Mitch, and I talked about you. Were your ears burning?

Leon, yes, the day comes when we need to get a check-up. Today is my day. But the AC in the car will be nice.

  8. It's just over 90ºF — 32.3ºC — at 1:30 p.m. Almost time for me to get in the air-conditioned car and drive up to Blois (45 minutes north).

  9. My ears were not burning - just all of me at the 38 deg level.
But there are a few Lesleys about even in France.

  10. It is weird to think of mid France being so hot. But then it never occurred to me that I could get sunburnt in London.

  11. Lesley, are you in Santa Cruz (California)? If not, we were talking about another Lesley (or Leslie)...

  12. I hope your ticker checks out well. Whoever thought of ac and heat in cars was wise. Who would think that your summer weather is hotter than Alabama right now. Maybe you should try planting cotton...

  15. We were watching France 2 yesterday afternoon and when we saw the temp. in Bordeaux I thought of CHM.

Ken , at least you can open all the windows or sit under the trees. Nice artichaut and hope the visit to the cardo went well. Enjoy your afternoon and evening outside.

  16. Holy bejeebers, that is hot. And close to 100°F in Paris?? That's nuts! I've seen Walt's updates on the temperature on FaceBook... crazy.

I hope all went well at the cardiologist visit, also, of course, and I, too, love the latest header :)

  19. So you are going to the heart doctor since the heat is bothering you. Makes sense.

  20. No, Cheryl, I'm going to the heart doctor because my father and grandfather both died of heart attacks at a fairly young age. It's just a checkup.

The heat only started today and the appointment with the cardiologist has been in the works for months, even years. I kept putting it off.
