“At its heart a delightfully attractive and interesting town, old Vendôme's location is striking, standing across different arms of the Loir which make a group of river islands below a castle-topped escarpment grandly called La Montagne. The Loir channels are crossed by many bridges, and the flowing water gives charm to the streets and parks.... In the 14th century, old Vendôme was ringed by fortifications, of which the handsome porte Saint-Georges is a remnant.” — that's what I read in the Signpost Guide to the Loire Valley.

The ruins of Vendôme's 14th century castle are up on La Montagne — there are great views of the old town and the Trinité abbey church from up there.

  1. I should look to see when the castle went into ruins.Made it went in stages since part of it looks pretty good still.

    1. Just like you, David, I love those stained-glass windows. I cannot date them, but I’d suggest 15th or 16th century.
I don’t remember going inside the abbey church, but I have a vivid recollection of meeting a juvenile jackdaw outside the church. Maybe his family has an appartement in the bell tower?

    2. Ha, yes probably so. I'm drawn to the blues and purples in those windows.
