Azay-le-Rideau : un vitrail de Max Ingrand
During the second world war, quite a few of the stained glass windows at the Église Saint-Symphorien in Azay were destroyed. Some of them were replaced in 1955, including this one by the maître-verrier (master glazier) named Max Ingrand. The scene depicted is the crowning of the Virgin Mary. It's a very large window.

You see Max Ingrand everywhere in the Loire Valley for similar reasons -- the chapel at the Chateau Royal de Blois, Chenonceau, the Chapelle de Saint Hubert in the grounds of the Chateau Royal d'Amboise. And it is interesting that even before the Venice Convention on the Conservation and Restoration of Historic Monuments, the irreparable stained glass was being replaced in a manner that would still be considered best practice today ie with something that is the best possible quality contemporary to the work, and not a pastiche or pretend old. Ahem...unlike the spire at Notre Dame de Paris.
