Browns

The red and gold season is fading to brown now. Twice last week we had high winds overnight, so many of the remaining leaves fell to the ground. It's nice that the grass stays green in wintertime here, and so does the laurel hedge.

Above are the maple leaves that we raked up on Saturday and carried out to the vegetable garden plot. In the gap between the cherry laurel hedges on the left and the hazelnut hedge on the right there's a view of the vineyard and the woods behind it.

The leaves are also off the linden tree right behind the house. And above is the house with its new look, now that the greenhouse is in place. We are still in the process of moving plants into the new space, and there's Callie in the photo watching me as I wander around the yard with my camera.

Finally, I'll finish my brown theme with a closeup of the tile in our new shower. We're expecting the plumber in a couple of hours. He needs to put up the glass enclosure around the shower base and install the plumbing fixtures. Maybe we'll be able to start using the new shower tomorrow.

  1. That greenhouse really "makes" the back of your house!
It fills the gap "reet proppa" as they say oop t'North!!

  2. You almost makes me want to be a house owner again. Almost. I went to Paris this weekend however and know that it is in the city I am at my best.

    1. The greenhouse is a great addition to our little "spread." Besides, we made out like bandits with the purchase and the installation. So far it seems pretty much perfect.

  4. On Susan's blog this morning, she and Tim were commenting on all the hazel nuts they have. I've always wondered why you and Walt have such bad luck with them and thus keep the bushes clipped back.
The shower tile is perfect. Especially like the contrasting solid white bench seat.

    1. Years ago I saw a documentary on French TV about some British people who bought a hazelnut orchard in Southwestern France. They had counted on living off the proceeds of their harvest the next year, but it was a complete bust. They didn't know that they needed to spray the hazelnuts with a pesticide to kill the insects whose larvae bore into the nuts and made them unsalvageable. The next year they sprayed and became profitable.

Sometimes I think hazelnuts are too much of a pain to get out of the sell. For the few I want every year, I might as well buy them at the supermarket. In fact, give me some papershell pecans any day and I'll be much happier.

  5. The brown tile looks great. I like the way you've stacked it, rather than doing, say, a brickwork type pattern.

    1. I like the clean lines of the tile pattern, but it was the tile layer's decision to do it that way. The glass panels and plumbing fixtures went in today, so there is light at the end of the tunnel.

  6. The greenhouse is a wonderful addition, and agreed on the color and placement of the shower tiles. The whole thing is a major success. Next stop for you, Architectural Digest? :-)

  7. Love the way the greenhouse looks behind your house. Roasted pecans are really good eats.
