St-Vaast : huîtres etc.

I think I mentioned yesterday that St-Vaast-la-Hougue is known for its oysters. Oysters (des huîtres, raw on the half-shell) were our lunch the day I took these pictures (May 13, 2005). Walt, our dog Collette, and I were enjoying a few days on the Cotentin peninsula.

I think I also mentioned yesterday that I wondered if there was some special nautical even going on in St-Vaast the day we were there. The answer to that question was staring me in the face among my photos (on the left above). Notice on the menu pictured above right that oysters are the first items listed.

A few more storefronts along the harbor at St-Vaast

  1. The menu board got me looking up bulots. I feel like I've seen that here, before, but was thinking it might be some kind of clam. When I Googled, I actually got a Days On the Claise blog post from 2010, and you were one of the commenters, and you and Susan were discussing if they could be called escargots de mer or not :)

    1. For what it's worth, here's a Wikipédia article about escargots de mer.

  2. I like them cooked better than raw, with spinach and bread crumbs. ;-)

    1. I like them cooked these days. I don't really eat them raw these days.

  3. So...what were your thoughts on the taste of their oysters?

    1. It's hard to remember except to say that they were good.

  4. When at the coast where the fish is the absolute freshest, it is hard for me not to give that meal the 'best taste' review, when asked. I haven't been over to our coast during crab season, but it is coming up in the northern part of our state where my friend has a home in Lincoln City. I might have to beg a visit as it has been awhile since I have been there and been able to enjoy fresh crab right off the fishermen's boats.
