Drive about 30 miles northeast of Barneville-Carteret — it takes about an hour — and you'll come upon the beautiful harbor at the little town of Barfleur (pop. 550 or so) on the Cotentin Peninsula's east-facing coast.
Legend has it that William the Conqueror departed from Barfleur when he went and conquered the English forces at the battle of Hastings and become the new king of England.
In the year 1189, Richard the Lion-Hearted departed from Barfleur when he crossed the Channel from Normandy to Great Britain to be crowned king of England. He never spent much time in England, and some say he never really spoke English himself.
Barfleur used to be an important fishing port, but nowadays most of the boats you see in the harbor are pleasure boats. Barfleur is a seaside resort nowadays. It has lost about a third of its population over the past 40 years.
Looks charming!
