About a 15 minute drive downriver from Saint-Aignan is the town of Thésée, often but not officially called Thésée-la-Romaine because of the Roman ruins there. The ruins are those of a second century Gallo-Roman building which was the site of a significant pottery industry with 23 kilns. It's a well-preserved example of the building techniques and architecture of the time.
These are so similar to the Roman walls of the Cluny museum. Always astonishing that the local people have respected the ruins and have left them standing throughout so many centuries!

ReplyDeleteI was thinking the well-maintained grounds reminded me of Stonehenge. You have so many captivating locales right in your backyard! Those Romans liked France and left their mark all over the place!
