The church called Notre-Dame de Nanteuil is in Montrichard, but it wasn't built there. No, they didn't move it. The village where it was located, Nanteuil, was annexed by Montrichard at some point in time, and Notre-Dame de Nanteuil still bears that name. it's on the western edge of Montrichard, near the train station.

Notre-Dame de Nanteuil was built starting in the 8th century — more than a thousand years ago. Over the course of the centuries the original Romanesque building was modified and enlarged by the addition of Gothic-style chapels and an outside staircase. It was damaged during the wars between the Plantagenêts and the king of France and had to be at least partially re-built.
Those pesky Plantagenets!
ReplyDeleteI didn't even think about there being an actual Saint Aignan :)
Aignan was the bishop of Orléans in the 5th century A.D. He performed a miracle, they say, that saved Orléans from being sacked by Attila and his Huns. (link)
