Février 2003 (9)

It was a very frosty morning in February when I took these photos. A black swan and some ducks were strutting around the grounds at Chenonceau. Some flowers — mostly primroses, I think — were already blooming. The sun was shining brightly through the stained glass in the chapel inside the château. Those three women in the painting pictured below didn't seem to be bothered much by the cold...

  1. What a bizarre thing it is to have 3 naked women frolicking, in a painting.... when you think about it.
It's amazing how well you captured the frost on the leaves!

  2. That black swan is so pretty to look at. With the gardens and water, Chenonceau is a feast for the senses.

  3. The three ladies in scant attire are probably the three Graces. The one on the left is definitely callypige!
In the Getty Villa Museum in LA, there is, in a corner at pedestrian level, a copy of a naked Venus turning her back to the visitors. She’s placed in such a way that you can stroke her behind without being seen. The material of the statue is polished there. I contributed! It was such a temptation! Callypige!
Black swans are so elegant when swimming on water and so clumsy when on land. This goes for white swans too!

  4. Now I am going to have to go to the Getty Villa and look for that statue. Of course I had to look up callypige. Of course I got a big laugh out of that. Who knew there was such a perfect word?

    1. Hi! David. Let me know if that callypige stone lady is still there in the Getty Villa.
