I took the pictures above and below within a minute of each other while looking across Beaufort Inlet from the balcony of the condominium we had rented on Bogue Banks for this week on the coast. In the distance is the island called Shackleford Banks, which is part of the Cape Lookout National Seashore, a federal park. The inlet is over a mile wide. In the image below, you can see fishing trawlers coming into port. "Banks" is the name we give to the barrier islands along this part of the North Carolina coast.
