The Vouvray gîte — the bedroom, the bathroom

We stayed in this gîte (a furnished vacation rental) twice. The first time was a week in early October 2000. The second time was two weeks in May and June of 2001. In 2001 I took some photos of the bedroom Walt and I slept in. The skylight was the only window in the room. The other bedroom (I have no photos of it) had a double bed in it, if I remember correctly. I wonder if CHM has any photos of it. He stayed with us in the Vouvray gîte for a week in 2001.

And here's a photo of the bathroom. I'm just trying to give you an idea what a nice, affordable gîte can be like. This one in Vouvray was fairly small, but it was perfectly comfortable for three good friends.

In late May and early June, the weather was gorgeous. We were lucky. As you can see, when we were there in the daytime, we had all the windows and doors wide open.

By the way, the house in the photos is no longer rented out as a gîte. The woman who owned it, as well as the huge house across the street where she lived, apparently sold both the properties a decade or more ago.

  1. It's cute. It would probably make a nice house, regardless of size.

    It's a good day isn't it? ;-)

    1. Yes, it's a good day if you meant the October Suprise which was meant to happen sooner or later. Wonder what the quarantine will be like?

  2. I might have photos of the outside, but probably no photo of the inside.

  3. I often wonder how long many gîtes stay in business? I think some people have a good business sense (like Jane and her husband -- they had a long history in the lodging business, before starting their gîte) for how much they can spend, and everything about it, and other folks do it with a romantic concept, rather than a realistic idea in their heads of how much they'll be able to make off of it. That's just my perception! LOL I did watch a French show last year about big French homes that were turned into this kind of business (or as chambres d'hôte), where the owners were in way over their heads.

    1. I've talked to gîte owners over the years. Some have told me that what turned out to be idealistic expectations motivated them to become gîte operators. They thought they would make contact with, become friends with, people from all over France, Europe, and the world by renting out gîtes. Many have become disillusioned. Others thought they would make a lot of money, or at least a significant income supplement, by renting out such properties, but many were disappointed. Everyday problems like stopped-up drains and damage to furnishings have been more the rule than the exception.

  4. Whoa, your side bar is gone from the main page! Ha! I see that it comes up below this comment space, once we click to comment. Is this your new design, or something that blogger is doing wrong?

    1. I've just noticed the moved sidebar (bottombar?) too. It's not something That I've done.

  5. Walt and Susan still have sidebars. Les joyeusetés de l'électronique!

    1. I fixed it but I still don't know why it happened. It had something to do with line breaks in the text of my post. As I've said, the new Blogger interface/authoring tool is very quirky.

    2. I haven't posted a blog in about 1 1/2 years, since this year's France trip was cancelled, so I don't know if I'l be able to deal with the new Blogger situation. I may have to try it for our upcoming very short trip w/in our state.

  6. As you might know, we've stayed in many gites over the years. This one is very typical of the kinds we've rented. While some were much larger, most were pretty modest in size. And most had a nice outdoor eating area. Of course, that's because we often looked for that when we searched.
Also, over the years I've occasionally checked out gites we had previously rented, and discovered that many of them were no longer available for rental, at least not through Gites de France.

  7. Bring back the sidebar;-) Maybe the gites are now doing airbnb. In the 80s I put some wallpaper up in my house due to weird peer pressure- what was I thinking?

  8. That wallpaper would make me dizzy.

    1. We were only in that room at night, in the dark, sleeping. So we could stand it.

  9. "Maybe the gites are now doing airbnb." I believe some are doing both. In other words, still listed on Gites de France, but also Air BnB.
