Le bon vieux temps

Our new lockdown started yesterday. We're confined to quarters except for very specific reasons for which we need to go out in public. We can shop for groceries, go to the pharmacy, or go out for medical appointments. I called my new dentist's office yesterday and after being kept on hold for 15 minutes I talked to somebody and got confirmation that my Monday morning appointment will not be cancelled because of the stay-at-home order. When we go out, we have to download, fill out, print, and sign an affadavit (une attestation) stating the purpose of our trip and the time of our departure from our residence.

We are also allowed to go out once a day to get some exercise and walk our dogs, but only within one kilometer (about half a mile) from home and for one hour or less. We read somewhere that people are not allowed to cross regional borders. That would have ruled out our trip down to the Limoges area, but even without that restriction traveling so far from home for a vacation would not have been allowed. People who traveled before Thursday midnight to spend this big holiday weekend (All Saints Day) in other regions will be allowed to return to their places of residence next week as long as they carry the affadavit described above.

My slideshow for today shows some pictures of people and places in Provence back in the pre-confinement days, when we could enjoy gathering together and socializing. The title of this post, le bon vieux temps, means "the good old days." And they were, weren't they?

Today's lunch will be deep-fried pumpkin fritters — beignets de potiron. I don't think we've ever made those before (though we have made sweet potato fritters in the past). Tomorrow I plan to make a big one-pot boiled dinner with vegetables (turnips, rutabagas, carrots, pumpkin, potatoes, leeks, celery etc.), sausages, and two pieces of pork, one smoke-cured and the other salt-cured. It's called une potée in French, and there are as many varieties of potée as there are regions and cooks.

  1. Ken, Use your smartphone for the attestation. If you have downloaded the app "stop Covid" or the new version "tousanticovid", there's a link directing you straight to the website https://media.interieur.gouv.fr/deplacement-covid-19/ or you can just put that link into your phone's browser. This creates the pdf with a QR code on your phone. That way you don't have to waste any paper or ink.

    1. Ellen, I don't even have a smartphone! No need for one out here in the country.

  2. You were wise to cancel your gite. No lockdowns here...yet. I enjoyed the slide show of the good old days. I probably have a few of the same photos from isle de la Sorgue.

    2. We want to let our friend from all those years ago that we had decided we needed to stay home, not travel and be out in public so much, right now. Especially since she and her husband offered to let us have the gîte for free. We figured that if there was no November lockdown, they might get some paying customers. Well, now we're in lockdown mode again.

  3. I especially loved the bright sun on the closed orange umbrellas, behind Walt, at Café de la Sorgue, and then that photo of the red shutters against the creamy orange wall of the building. Sun!

We have just gone back to in-person school, with a crazy schedule where some kids stay at home, some kids come Weds/Fri and some kids come Tues/Thurs. Teachers, though, are there four days/week (everyone is "virtual" on Mondays). So, with Halloween weekend coming up, I asked one of the students if she was dressing up, and she said, "Well, kind of, I'm having a murder mystery party." After a few more questions, I learned that there will be 8 people, and no one will be wearing masks... together all evening. Inside. People just don't get it. Why are their parents letting them do this, is my question!

    2. For decades, the Republicans have tried to turn the public education system into a conservative/evangelical manifesto.

  4. Oui, sunshine and the beautiful cafe's and buildings of Provence. I will go there in a heartbeat once this situation is in control and I am still mobile!!! Loved your photos, Ken! I came home from Isle-sur-la-Sorgue with a silver necklace I always get compliments on and some espadrilles in french blue that I didn't like wearing at all because there is no support whatsoever. Walt's photo with the umbrellas makes me smile! Thanks for the memories...as the crooner would sing!
