Across the way from the cathedral in Cambrai is this small chapel called la chapelle des Jésuites. It was built toward the end of the 17th century, replacing a 16th century Gothic chapel that was judged too small. This building, in the Baroque style, was not heavily damaged during World War I and served as a place of worship after war while the cathedral was being restored. Nowadays it's a museum. The artist who created the relief on the façade, called L'Assomption de la Vierge, is unknown, as far as I can determine.
This Baroque chapel is absolutely superb. The sculptor of that magnificent bas-relief was certainly influenced by Bernini. Your photo is equally superb!
ReplyDeleteI was surprised that there was no photo or even a mention of that relief on the Monumentum page for the collège des Jésuites. I'd call it a haut-relief.
DeleteThe line between haut and bas reliefs is very thin. Parts of this masterpiece is haut and parts is bas.
