People in Paris

Going through all the photos I took in Paris, I'm surprised to see how many of them don't show any people. Many of the photos were taken from the top of the Tour Saint-Jacques, so I guess it's not really too surprising. I hope the photos below will give you a sense of what it's like to walk around Paris in summertime.

People walking on the rue des Rosiers in the Marais

People crossing a main Paris street near the Tour Saint-Jacques

People walking across a bridge near Notre-Dame cathedral

People at a famous café in the St-Germain-des-Prés neighborhood

People on the Pont des Arts near the Louvre

Paris was crowded along the river, in the touristy zones, but it wasn't crowded at all in the neighborhoods farther from the historic center. It was July, after all, and many Parisians were on vacations out of town. I noticed quite a few businesses that were closed until the end of August, when everybody comes back into the city to start the new work and school year.

  1. Great photos. People watching is such fun.

The Parisians who own the holiday home opposite ours arrived two weeks ago to spend two months in the village. They seem to spend a lot of the time doing housework, decorating and alterations to the property. We never see them in the village, certainly not in the bars or restaurants.

  4. You're an early riser, Ken-- were some of these photos taken earlier in the day, when fewer people might be out? They're great :)

  5. Judy, the first two photos were taken between 11 and 12, and the last three after lunch.

OFG, I like that woman'd look too. Pure luck.

  6. Love the photo in front of Les Deux Magots. A study in royal blue and red. Love the guy in the blue sport coat carrying his evening bottle of wine. We just got back from our 3 week France trip led by our friends from Tours.

  8. So many of my photos have no one in them, except the starchy posed photos of my fellow travelers. Just recently I decided to stop waiting for people to clear out of the way of whatever I'm photographing and, instead, take pictures of their enjoying the "whatever."

  10. Der, that should be "unfortunate" outfits in my comment above.

  11. Ahhhhhhh! What glorious photos.....they are magnificent. And they are making me groan with longing for Paris. I love the Marais street scene.....hell, I love 'em all.

  12. Lo, thanks. I do feel lucky to have spent so much time in Paris when I was younger, and to be able to go there easily these days. Fact is, Walt and I spent more time in Paris (vacations) when we lived and worked in San Francisco than we do now.

Penny, I hadn't really noticed the blue and red contrasts in that Deux Magots photo. Thanks for pointing them out.

Lee, Starman, Leon, FS, thanks for the good comments.
