Weather report

Inside the house this morning at six o'clock, the temperature is 74ºF (23ºC). That's higher than our high temperatures outdoors were during the first week of August, not to mention our morning lows. The temperature outdoors right now is 26ºC (79ºF), which is about what our high temperatures were over the past 5 days (except yesterday, when it hit 93ºF). I'm not complaining, just reporting. It feels slightly less muggy than yesterday morning. The fan is helping some by bringing in some "cool" outdoor air. No AC here, but I'm sleeping just fine.

Below is a photo I took pretty much exactly 24 hours ago as the sun was rising. I think I can feel heat in that sky.
I took the picture from our front terrace.

  1. In Salton City, in the SoCal desert, we left the thermostat temperature at 80*F year round!

    1. It's has been raining lightly for the past two hours. It's only 23 degrees C on the terrace and nearly 25 C in the house. I'd be happy with 80 in the daytime, but I'd prefer cooler temperatures at night. We keep our thermostat at 18.5 in winter but we modify that as needed for comfort by building a fire in the wood stove.

    1. Yes. I'm not sure my photo does justice to the real scene.

    1. It is in France, and it always has been in the U.S. Except in San Francisco and the Pacific Northwest, where it's not really needed. I remember, years ago, living in SF and reading an article in the city's newspaper about the longest heatwave in history in the city. The high temperature in July had been 20 degrees C or slightly higher for five days in a row! Saint-Aignan's weather is more like that, usually.

  4. Our home is kept at 74 at night, 76 during the day. Glad you have a fan.

    1. We have three fans. A big one and a medium-size one in the loft, as well as the small one we use when needed. The loft gets hotter than the rest of the house when the sun shines, as it has done for the past few days.

  5. Our neighbors who moved in across the street three years ago have forced-air heating and cooling, using heat pumps — five of them. They told me the other day that they haven't turned on the AC yet this summer.

    1. By the way, I don't really like having or having to have AC in the house. But I really like having it in the car. CHM couldn't stand have the AC on in the car, even on hot days. He's from another planet, I sometimes think!

  6. It’s going to be 106 here in OKC, and the normal for today is 93. Seems like we’re living in a Twilight Zone episode.

    1. That's hellish. I'm sure you too have AC. Bon courage.

  7. Oh, yes, that sunrise photo... Ken, it's gorgeous!
I'm glad that you are able to sleep okay ... that's the biggest thing, probably.
We're expecting a surge in temperatures starting tomorrow, for at least a week... expecting to hit 100° F or higher on several days. Yuck.

  8. As you wrote, Ken, here in the PNW, it is not unusual for older houses (mine - built 1978) to not have a/c not only because we have past history of lower temperatures but also because we have many trees in our cities and towns that give us shade. In the past two days it seems like suddenly we have a/c! It has been absolutely heavenly to have highs only in the 80's - so today I played pickleball for nearly 3 hours! It has been very hazy and most of it is smoke that hasn't come down to our level yet - so I really appreciate your sunrise photo. Nothing to see, here! Sunsets, YES! And I do love the stupendous colors we have had lately! My cat and I are both more active and "out and about" !
