Un grand « petit coin »

I'm realizing something this morning. I think we could have made the new WC a lot smaller than we did. I suppose an argument could be made for having made it so spacious. Later, after we're gone, somebody might decide to put a small shower stall in there.

Here's the WC in the gîte rural we stayed in last October in the Vendée, out on the Atlantic coast. It really was a petit coin — and rustic-looking. It was downstairs in the rental property, off the kitchen. There was a full bathroom, with a toilet, sink, and shower, upstairs.

And here's the petit coin in the gîte rural we stayed in last March in Le Puy-en-Velay (Auvergne). It was more finished, felt cleaner, and was located off the living room. There was the same kind of bathroom upstairs as in the Vendée gîte — shower, sink, and toilet.

I thought our new WC was going to be a cramped space. I was wrong. It's a big room, considering its function. We'll be able to put a storage cabinet inside, to the right of the door. We might also decide to put a shelving unit or cabinet of some kind on the opposite side of the room. I'm thinking we might have chosen a larger sink too. Things can always be changed.

Here's the WC door. You can't really see through it, but the frosted glass panels let in daylight from the window on the right. That's nice, even though the light fixture we found and have had installed over the door lights the room more than adequately. In this photo, the light inside is switched on.

  1. Love the frosted glass door. Bathroom looks nice. Don't know how much further you could have pushed back the entry door with the sloping ceiling.

    1. That was a constraint with the sliding door. We could have put in an ordinary (hinged) door. The bathroom is large enough that having a door that opened into the room would have been fine. We opted for the sliding door because we thought of the room as being pretty small.

    1. We are pretty happy with it so far, except for that too-small sink.

    2. You seem to have enough room to accomodate a larger sink. You wont't regret the change.

    3. La plombier est d'accord avec nous et nous dit qu'il pourra facilement démonter le petit lave-mains et monter le lavabo et son meuble de rangement à sa place. Ouf !

  3. Good looking convenience. WC's always look even better when seats and covers are down! Is that a woman thing?

    1. I too think they look better with the seat down. We hardly ever keep it down, however, having no women in the household.

  4. The frosted glass door is genius.
Le bon coin is a good source for sinks, should you decide to change. I have resolved to only buy things there (or at brocantes/vide greniers).

    1. We need to get the job finished so we don't have time to chiner or reply to ads. Sorry we don't. We have arranged this morning to have that tiny sink taken back out and a bigger one put in.

  5. Off topic, I just renewed my Bloctel subscription. How did it work for you, you didn't say?

  6. We still get half a dozen telemarketing calls every day, but that's an improvement.

  7. Really looks nice....like it's always been a part of the room.

  8. Well, it's always nice to have enough space in a little room. It looks very nice in its spot, there, and I love the frosted-glass door. Can't wait to see the new sink -with-rangement!

    1. We're getting the new cabinet and sink from Ikea. Walt's going to Tours tomorrow to pick it up.

  9. That all looks very nice. The frosted-glass door is a great choice, and having it as a pocket door is even better. You'll have plenty of room for a storage cabinet or chest in there, plus wall space to hang things.
