The Michelin Green guidebook points out that Langeais is unusual among the châteaux that stand along the banks of the Loire river in that it was built over a relatively short time and has never been greatly modified since it was completed toward the end of the 15th century. It looks like a feudal fortress, but it was built at the very end of the Middle Ages, just as the French Renaissance was getting under way. Here's a two-minute slideshow made up of photos I've taken in Langeais (pop. 4,500) over the years — some are from 2010, others from 2018.
The stone wall standing in the château's gardens is what remains of an earlier fortification that was built in the 10th century. ReplyDeleteIt's good to have seen Langeais from the front. I've been there three times. Now I want to go back, go inside, and walk around the gardens on the back side of the building.
