A stiff breeze and some rough surf

After the storm clouds cleared Wednesday night — we were lucky — the weather turned bright, sunny, and chilly. I drove over to the beach again yesterday morning to see how things looked over there.

What seems to be a straight strand of sand actually curves noticeably to the south when you look west. Or is that some kind of illusion?

A foamy surf close-up

I was standing on the beach at about where the red dot is, looking west, when I took my photos. MA lives where I put the green dot, in Morehead City, a mile north.

Houses and sand fences on the beach

Silver surf

Sea foam on the beach

The ocean was pretty rough and a stiff breeze was blowing in from the west-southwest. The breeze was not cold or unpleasant, as long as you weren't in a place where blowing sand was a nuisance — and I wasn't.

    1. Yes, they are Lumix TZ60 photos. I didn't bring the Canon camera on this trip.

  4. My dad went on fishing trips with his friends off Morehead City. From your photos, I wish mom and I had gone along :)
The foam on the waves, sigh ... it has been years since I have seen and smelled the ocean .

  5. There's magic here today. I love seeing sea and sky (sun helps a lot) which are calming. Glad you got out for a while.

  8. It is a very complicated and interesting coastline.

    1. It's very intricate, with an outer coast — 300 miles of sandy ocean beaches — and an inner coast made up of probably twice as many miles of shoreline and salt marshes along estuaries and sounds, protected by barrier islands).

Here's a link to a satellite view of coastal North Carolina.

  9. Not an optical illusion...unless you count the fact that the camera has foreshortened the foreshore!!
If you look at the map, you can see that it does curve away like that.
They are great beach shots....especially "Silver Surf"...despite the largish breakers, it seems very restful....
Just the place for a walk and a think!!

Take the houses away and those chestnut-paling sand fences and dunes could be North Norfolk [UK]....
just the place to do some seawatching!

  10. Those are wonderful water pictures. All that light and glinting silver, I can almost smell the surf. Love to walk on a winter beach, and I so miss the water living inland.
