2026 N.C. snow report

My home town, Morehead City in North Carolina, has a foot or more of snow on the ground this morning. My sister lives just two or three miles from the local National Weather Service Office, which reports 15 inches of snow. That's the biggest snowstorm that the area (Carteret County) has had since December of 1989 — or maybe in the history of weather record keeping. I remember my mother telling me about digging out after that 1989 storm. I had moved to California in 1986.

My sister, who still lives there, says she is snowed in and doesn't know when she'll be able to get out again. She doen't want to try to drive on snowy, icy roads and bridges. There is more water than land in Carteret County. All this makes our weather here in Saint-Aignan seem pleasant. Actually, the sky is clear here this morning.

  2. Nashville was hit really badly last week. Some people don't have power yet, wifi is out, etc. Also the generators sometimes catch on fire. There's lots of wintertime miseries this year. Meanwhile in San Diego it was 80 degrees.

    1. Yes unusual weather on the west coast too. LA hit 87 on January 31st, a record. Like your sister, Ken, I wouldn't want to drive on those icy roads either. Especially if you're not used to it!

    2. Sue told me yesterday that she has enjoyed more than a week of afternoon temperatures in the middle 60s to low 70s. Lucky for her.

  3. I live in the Bear Creek community of Hubert, 6 miles from Swansboro Ken. I don't know when I'll be able to get out of my driveway. My house is located down a hill. I'm hoping by Wednesday. The creek behind my house is frozen over and there's at least a foot or more of snow on my patio and covered porch. I'm very thankful that the electricity didn't go out, and my furnace is still kicking. This snowmageddon beats the big snow we had in 1989. Wanda aka Galestorm

    1. I hope the snow is melting now. Glad you didn't lose heat or light.

    2. Just curious, Wanda. Do you remember my uncle who had a fishing camp at Bear Creek? His name was Rudolph Henderson. I remember going there with him in the 1950s and '60s.

    3. I did know him well. They called him Doc. If it's the same Rudolph, I used to ride to work with him to Cherry Point. The old fishing camp was on the inland waterway. The last time I was out that way on the water, the old camp was still standing, but that was years ago. There was another Rudolph Henderson that lived in Jacksonville. If I remember correctly, he was somehow involved with getting the community college started in Jacksonville. Were you related to the one in Bear Creek or Jacksonville?

    4. I think my "uncle Henderson" was originally from Beaufort. I think he was known as Doc. He was married to my Aunt Maidie, who was my grandmother's sister. She died back in the seventies. He lived into the 1990s, if memory serves. They had a son named Butch. Uncle Henderson and Aunt Maidie lived next to the Dairy Queen drive in the Rabbit Hill section of Morehead. When my sister and I were children, we would go to see them and Uncle Henderson (his wife called him Henderson) we give us a nickel or a dime to go buy and ice cream cone. We loved him for that. I'm pretty sure he worked at Cherry Point.

    5. Your Uncle Henderson is not the same Doc that I knew. It sure would have been a small world if it was. You have a nice memory of your uncle. I'm sure he loved you and your sister very much.
I worked at Cherry Point for 3 years and transferred to Camp Lejeune. The folks down that way were some of the nicest people I've ever worked with.

  4. Holy cow! They had talked about a bomb cyclone expected to hit the east coast this past weekend... I guess it's from that. I HATE that feeling of being trapped in the house, when there is that much snow. Hoping for the best, in terms of electric power supply, and warming temps, as well as someone plowing her out, and plowing streets.
