Janvier 2004 (3)

My new notebook computer is up and running. And the old notebook computer seems to be working very well too — no flickering. Mysterious. Anyway, here are a few more photos that I took in Vendôme, 40 miles north of Saint-Aignan, nearly 20 years ago, using a Kodak digital camera of that era.

L'abbaye de la Trinité is one of the town's major landmarks.

This is the tour Saint-Martin, a Renaissance-era tower that is all that remains of an old church of that name

Houses along one of the many branches of the Loir river that run through Vendôme

And a Citroën 2CV (une deux chevaux) parked in the old town

  1. Love the timbered building in the last picture.... but the rest of Vendome is a bit too "city" for me....
The Loir, just below Vendome is where the first reintroduction of beavers took place in 1974 from a relict protected population in the Jura region... it was felt that the Loire was just too big for them.... but they didn't... they cro0ssed the Loire and have populated all the tributaries and most of the tributaries' tributaries too.... even here, outside the kitchen window!! A little trout stream.....
That 2CV Club [square headlights] looks in ace condition except for the front bumper... and you can now get inox sets... but one like this is only 35€ and half-an-hour to replace. But, in 2004, very few dealers selling them....
I wonder where it is now, nineteen years on!

I read the comment yesterday that the old computer had a touch of "garage'itis".... perhaps it just wanted to retire!! But, better that than trying to recover from a dodgy machine!!
Fibre is soooooo fast.... working with pictures is a dream.... "click" and they are there.... it will cut me back on coffee consumption while the "it's loading" wheels spin!!
We had cable in the UK... fibre to the box at the end of the road and datacable to each house.... ADSL was soooo slow compared to that.... but I reckon fibre to the house is three or four times faster than cable.

  2. chm— Some January day in 1983, forty years ago, I called you to offer you a job. Could not talk to you because you were in the shower, but you called me back and the rest is history.
Forty years! Time flies! A lot can happen in forty years!
I remember our stop in Vendôme some years ago on our way to Paris. On the outside of the beautiful church of the abbaye de la Trinité, I had my first and last in person meeting with a jackdaw!
Unlike you, I have no idea what I had for lunch in that small restaurant, but I do remember, ivrogne que je suis, the delicious local rosé wine. We took the doggie-bottle with us!
    Pleasant strolling down memory lane…

    2. chm it's so great to see you! I love that expression "doggie bottle." Ken, I read an article recently that those old Kodak digital cameras are becoming popular of late because of the "look" of the photos they take. Also loving the masons des colombages in these pics.

    4. Bonjour Charles-Henry, yes, 40 years of friendship and travels have gone by now. Meeting you in January 1983 was a life-changing and life-enabling experience, just as meeting Walt in 1981 was. I certainly wouldn't be where I am today if I hadn't met you back then. I've been thinking recently about how important all our travels around France, as well as my stays at your apartment in Paris were to me. You were very generous to put me up and put up with me all those times. Those were the good old days, and I miss them dearly. Like Diogenes, I'm happy to hear from you.

As for Vendôme that day in June 2008, I don't remember the restaurant where we had lunch or what either of us ate, and I didn't blog about it at the time. I do remember the cold and tasty Pineau d'Aunis rosé wine, though. And I remember that we continued on to Châteaudun and Dourdan on the way to Paris.

I'm having a lot of trouble with my new laptop. I've been trying for 2 hours to get it to connect to the internet and to my blog. Then just a few minutes ago it suddenly connected. I don't know if it was some setting I changed or if it was just a strange internet outage. We are supposed to get fiber optics installed this coming Tuesday, and I know that Orange technicians are tinkering with our service.

  3. That was me earlier. Your old camera took some nice photos for us to enjoy today. Funny about your old laptop being cured of its twitter now that you bought the new one!
