Wishing you both a healthy and happy New year. I read daily but seldom comment. We visited saint Aignan in September as we were staying about an hour's drive away. It's very beautiful! I was a bit shocked at the prices in the Biscuiterie though! đ
No, I got the card, sorry if I didn't answer right away. I hope you noticed my mention of going to work for/with you in 1983 was one of the pivotal moments in my life.
If you hadn't given me a chance, that might well have been the end of my contact with France and the French language. Even when I left DC and moved to California with Walt, because of all my experiences in France and at USIA, I soon found a job teaching French classes evenings and Saturdays at San Francisco City College. That kind of work didn't pay enough to cover living expenses in San Francisco, but it was a fun and interesting way to supplement my income from my much less interesting jobs in the computer software business out there. I finally had to quit teaching, but by then Walt and I were making enough money to come to France for our vacations every year. And that turned into the move to Saint-Aignan in 2003.
You were exactly the person I had been looking for : a native of the language with a good enough knowledge and understanding of French to spot the possible mistranslations from idiomatic English into French. Your credentials were more than enough for me.
Lovely sunset! Happy New Year to all. To Ken, and chm, and all the kind readers that make this a lovely spot to visit. We will join friends and watch TV until the Times Square ball drops (9 pm Pacific Time). Pretty wild eh?... Closing with a Dorothy Parker quote on drinking:
Martini, martini, the drink I like most. Two I'm under the table, three I'm under the host.
Diogenes - That is one hard act to follow! That's a new quote for me!
Wishing everyone the best of the new year and the new decade - Ken and Walt - I wish you, two, many more interesting blog posts and photos - Bertie and Tasha - I feel like you are part of my life, as well! I will look forward to hearing and seeing more of your explorations and adventures in the days ahead! Tonight at home I will try to help my cat survive the revelries that always come at midnight and don't stop for at least 30 minutes which is frightening for all of the animals.
Happy new year, peace and prosperity to all. In the words of "The Parting Glass" -- "good luck and joy be with you all."
Thanks to both Ken and Walt for such informative, educational, beautifully photographed, and always entertaining blogs. And for many more years to come.

Happy New Year Ken % Walt...
ReplyDeletewishing you both good fortune, happiness and health for 2020...
above all, health.
Happy 2020 to your readers!
ReplyDeleteEt pour moi donc, pas de bons vĆux ? LOL. In France, people don't wish others a happy new year until after the new year has started. I went shopping this morning and several people wished me a bonne fĂȘte and a bon rĂ©veillon, but nobody said bonne annĂ©e.
DeleteYes, I did send you an electronic card. Did it get lost in space? Others, understood what I meant by Season's Greetings-Joyeuses FĂȘtes!

DeleteYes I did, but I’m sure with your credentials you could have found any kind of interesting job.
