Au secours ! Ça caille !

Help! We're freezing! That's our cry this morning. We got up at 5 a.m. as usual. The house felt cold. That's because all the radiators were stone cold. A trip down to the utility room revealed that the boiler was not running. Our central heat consists of about a dozen steam radiators and a oil-fired boiler. The boiler is reporting an error code that is B33. We have lots of documentation but most of the text appears to be gobbledygook.

I called the emergency phone number to tell the people who do our boiler maintenance. We have a service contract with them. They are supposed to send out a technician immediately to figure out what's wrong with the boiler and fix it. The problem is, their office doesn't open until 7:30 a.m. and all we can do is leave a message. And wait. The waiting is the hardest part, as Linda Ronstadt sang. We have one little electric heater that we can plug in. It heats up one room. I've already put on a jacket. Maybe we should just go back to bed.

  1. It would be a good idea to light a fire, yes? I light ours as soon as we get up in the morning, keeping it ticking over all day. Comfortable temperature for thes cold mornings! Pats 🚜

  2. Cauchemare! Better news here, maybe - the temp has risen from the recently regular -10 overnight to -1. And the consequence is? You’ve guessed it - snow! About 3cm so far but it looks set for the day. Glad we went shopping yesterday, and that our heating (gas tank) is working. Lots of pellets for the stove later. I hope you get your boiler sorted quickly. And it’s good to hear from you. :-)

  3. Our boiler had stopped working while we were away for Christmas. We had left it set at 10°C to keep the house and water pipes from freezing but the indoor temperature was 5°C when we arrived back home. It’s a good job we were not away for longer during this very cold spell.
Luckily ours was a simple fix. I hope yours gets sorted soon. I expect the heating engineers are very busy at the moment and being cold is so miserable.

  5. The heating technician called us at about 11 a.m. and said he would be here in 10 minutes. And there he was. Fifteen minutes later., the job was done and our radiators were hot again. It's toasty warm in the house this afternoon.
