Dried cayenne peppers, etc.

On Wednesday, friends — and not the same ones who gave us the figs — brought us a big bag of beautiful cayenne peppers from their garden. To preserve them, I got out the food dehydrator that I bought a few weeks ago. The result is beautiful, don't you think? The long hot peppers are perfectly desiccated, almost weightless, and dark red. You can hear the seeds rattling inside them when you shake them.


We many decide to turn these into crushed red pepper flakes, but not today. This morning we have a plumbing and heating contractor coming in to begin work in our bathroom, putting up a towel warmer to replace the old radiator, changing out the old faucets on our bidet, and, finally, plumbing in a new shower stall.

I'll get back to Châtillon-sur-Indre tomorrow.

    1. Hot peppers are not something you can eat as a vegetable. They are good seasoning though.

    1. I forgot to take a "before" photo. And I haven't tasted the peppers to see how hot they are. If they are like the ones we've grown in past years, they are plenty hot.

  3. They do dehydrate well. I think we have grown enough to last us for years if they keep! Have a good weekend Diane

    1. Nick and Jean gave us these. We've grown them successfully in past years, but didn't plant any this year. I like to put them up in jars by pouring boiling vinegar over the raw peppers. That way, you get the peppers and the pepper vinegar to have with beans, greens, etc.

  4. My grandfather was a chef and he was also an ex Marine Drill Sgt. He ate those babies like I eat M&Ms ...
    I love the idea of the vinegar and peppers .. I can't eat them, generally, my stomach will burn for weeks. (I am a fragile flower lol)

  5. They look beautiful. We had a whole colander full of those peppers, the cherry red bomb ones and Jalapeño - and Y made a sauce with half of the bounty and I froze the remaining ones - a mix of green and red to be used during the year. I just drop them frozen in anything that I am cooking - with some surprises sometimes because it can turn to be too spicy hot :-)
    The sauce is great with BBQ chicken or as an added condiment in soup
