Happy Hallowe'en

At one stage when I was cutting up that big green and orange pumpkin I showed yesterday, here's what I found staring back at me. Does it look like a cat to you? Or a demon of some kind?

It didn't scare me though, and I ended up making the soup I also described yesterday. It's like a soupe that I had many years ago in a little restaurant out in the country somewhere in France. I added poached, shredded chicken to enrich it, and fresh basil leaves on top for flavor and a color contrast.

It's pieces of pumpkin, potato, onion, garlic and a stalk celery cooked in chicken broth with milk. I put in pinches of spices like allspice, fenugreek, turmeric, cayenne pepper, and black pepper. It was good.

Here's a link to the recipe.

  1. Definitely a demon! And a devilishly tasty soup.

  2. I am going to try to make this today. We are enveloped in a seriously deep fog and while it will burn away, it made me want to make soup. And here it is . Happy Halloween :)

  3. It looks super delicious! It made me wonder what it would be like with coconut milk and curry. But your version looks wonderful and now I think I will have to make some soup today, though the only squash I have in the house is a spaghetti one.

  4. Yes, that is definitely a cat in the pumpkin. The soup looks extra tasty, so please post the recipe. My daughter fenugreek to increase her milk supply, I had no idea it was an actual spice to cook with. I'll tell her about the soup although she's a vegetarian- perhaps it would be good without meat or maybe salmon would work.

    1. Why not salmon? Or shrimp? Or tofu, really? I wish I could find tofu here in Saint-Aignan.

  5. I think it looks like the FSM and if you hadn't prepared it for soup you could have sold it on EBay. MDR.

Did it taste like the soup you remembered from years ago? I also like the idea of the coconut milk and curry above for a Thai flair.

    2. I like using coconut milk in a lot of things .. and I eat salmon at least once a week then use leftovers in various dishes, so I would love this with salmon . I quit eating chicken. :)
