Forsythia

The name of this flowering shrub is the same in French as in English. One example I found on the Forvo application pronounced in English as [for-SIGH-thee-uh], but most say [for-SIH-thee-uh]. The -th- is said as in "thing" or "think", not as in "the" or "thus". In French it's pronounced something like [for-see-SYAH] with a French R and the stress on the third syllable. Ours has started blooming in our back yard now.

  1. Oh, Forsythia! I feel like I have come to think of it as the first thing in the yard to bloom... at least, it always was at my parents' house. There, we didn't have any daffodils... but, here at my house, my front garden is full of daffodils, and we don't have any forsythia, so the daffodils are the sign of spring on the horizon :) I finally have three that have blossomed. Betsy (who, yes, was here until Friday morning) was hoping to see one in blossom before she left (heading back to three feet of snow in Vermont, and tons that had just dumped down in Boston), but it opened the next day :) (And, thanks for asking how I'm doing... truth be told, it's sad, and it's hard, as Evelyn knows... we just keep trying to get through it day by day.)

  2. I love forsythia which we always had in KY. We also had pussywillow which are unique. I'm at the six month period for loss of Lewis. I can't say that it's better but I think I'm getting used to "different" and my friends have helped a lot.

  3. Interesting that they are the same in French and English, though I would not have guessed the French pronunciation. Thanks for spelling it out phonetically.

  4. Ducks stage migration here in the mid-Atlantic in late March, looking for early thaw on the Saint Lawrence and lakes of Ontario and Quebec. My first sightings of Forsythia were always in southern Delaware as I headed to the bay. This year, nothing. It has been a cold and snowy winter. A miserable winter. No daffodils yet. No forsythia. Wishing you a happy 77th. Here, blue crabs (maybe from Venezuela--something good out of that invasion?) and lentil soup.
