Maisons à vendre au Mont Saint-Michel

In a comment yesterday, Diogenes said he wouldn't mind living on the Mont-Saint-Michel. On the internet I didn't find any houses for sale on the Mont, but here's one only about three miles from it. It's surprisingly reasonable in price (299,000 euros = about 320,000 U.S. dollars) and looks beautiful. Below is a description in French that I found on the seloger.com web site. To see three other houses for sale nearby, and many more in the region, follow this link.  You can follow this link to display a slideshow of photos of the house described just below. There's a translation into English below.

Here's the translation (thanks to DeepL.com):

On the heights of the village of Roz-Sur-Couesnon, with a view of Mont-Saint-Michel, this 170 m2 property has all the comforts to welcome a family, with its spacious living areas including a main living room (approx. 44 m2) with fireplace and fitted and equipped kitchen, a 38 m2 lounge and four bedrooms (15.60 m2 / 17.30 m2 / 13.20 m2 / 12.70 m2). The layout of the property could also be used as a separate gîte, especially as the two attics could be converted into a further 70 m2 of living space with a full view of Mont-Saint-Michel.

The east-facing garden offers a beautiful view of the bay.

Additional details: Oil-fired underfloor heating (2012 boiler) on ground floor, electric roller shutters, slate roof, stone garage. Yard. House connected to fiber.

This house near the Mont is almost exactly the same size as our house in Saint-Aignan, but it's an example of a completely different architectural style.

  1. We stayed at a B&B with a view of MSM. If I lived on the Mont, I wouldn't see it.

  2. Oh, I always do love to see real estate in France -- thanks for this!
I have a question about the house you linked to: It's described as "maison neuve 3 étages". I assume neuve is referring to the fact that it is all newly re-done on the main floor... but, I have always understood, and taught, that étage refers to an upper floor, so that, an American 2-story house would be considered a house "avec un étage". Looking at this French house, it has a main floor, an upstairs (which I'd call le premier étage), and a dormer indicating living space in the attic (which I'd call le deuxième étage). So... that is a three-level house, but not a house with "3 étages". Is this term used more loosely than I'm thinking of it? I always remember a young Belgian man telling me excitedly that the house that he and his wife had just bought, "even has un étage!"... and it was just one upper floor.

    1. I agree about étage and I wouldn't call our house une maison à trois étages. Trois niveaux, yes, but not trois étages. We have a rez-de-chausée or rez-de-jardin that is made up of an entry way, a utility room (chaufferie/buanderie), a cellier, and a garage. The main level of the house is the kitchen, living room, bathroom, and two bedrooms. The room we call the loft in our house, which I might call the family room in the U.S., is just one big room that serves as a bedroom, a TV room, my desk and computers, and a half bath. I think a maison or immeuble à un étage would have a ground level (the first floor in the U.S.) and a premier étage. Often the ground level consists of a living/dining room, kitchen, bathroom (or a half bath), and sometimes a bedroom. The premier étage often consists of bedrooms and either a full or half bath. By the way, I don't think British usage in this context is the same as American.

    2. Also, I also wondered why the house I posted about was described as une maison neuve.
