Soon on the mend, maybe

I got in to see the doctor yesterday. Just convincing his assistant that I really needed an appointment was a strange experience. The first time I called, she said that the doctor didn't have any time to see me for at least the rest of the month. When I pressed her, she said I should call back the next morning at 8:05 a.m. (yes, 8:05) and ask again. It was like some kind of code or insider information.

I called yesterday at 8 :05 a.m. and the same woman answered. She asked me why I needed to see the doctor. I told her my right wrist was very swollen and was causing me a lot of pain. She hesitated for a second and then asked me if I could come in at noon. Yes, I said. Thank you.

I saw the doctor at noon — he has been our doctor for years — and he diagnosed my inflamed right wrist and a milder inflammation of  my left thumb joint. He said he could feel heat in the wrist joint, and he could see and feel the swelling (even though it was a lot less swollen than it had been at the beginning of the week).

As a result, he prescribed an anti-inflammation ointment, which I have to go get at the pharmacy today. He also prescribed a prise de sang (blood work), the results of which, he said, would give him a better idea about what's going on. I'll try to get an appointment for the blood test at the lab on Monday.

Meanwhile, I'm applying an Arnica montana ointment to the swollen wrist and painful thumb to continue getting the swelling and pain under control. It's a plant-based remedy that I bought on Amazon.fr. It reduces the swelling pretty quickly. And hey, I have successfully typed this relatively long post. Things are looking up.

  1. So glad to hear that you were able to see the doctor and to get some relief from the Arnica ointment. The French pharmacies also have arnica gel. Most important will be the blood work. Happy to see you typing again!

  2. All the doctor prescribed so far is ibuprofen pills and an Ibuprofen ointment. Maybe that will change when I give him and lab blood test results.

  3. Great to hear this “good” news from you. Well done for getting in to see the doctor. I’m sure the blood tests will help getting a proper diagnosis and treatment. I also have pains in my right thumb area but, luckily, no swelling and I can live with it for now. I guess it’s arthritis and that it comes with age. Ah well, sigh. Enjoy the weekend.

  4. Ken, I'm sorry to see that your arthritis is acting up. There's been quite a discussion about inflammation pain on a WhatsApp chat group of I belong to and there has been the suggestion to apply clay (argile verte) to the inflamed area and leave it on for two hours (some leave it on overnight after wrapping cellophane around it). This has been going on because someone is having upcoming knee surgery and is looking for some relief before that happens and another has carpal tunnel inflammation. You can find argile at pharmacies, health food places, and more importantly, Décathlon or other places that might have an equestrian sports department. It's much cheaper there, although the quantity might be too much for your use.
I have bought it at La Vie Claire, in power form, so I can mix up as much as I need and not waste it. I also reuse the plaster that I manage to peel off before rinsing the residue. I've used it on occasion on my knee and a toe and it does give relief and some reduction in swelling. If it hadn't been the subject of discussion this past week, I don't think I would have remembered it to recommend to you.

  5. Arnica is well known for very good results.... glad you are managing to get some treatment at last.... our doctor uses Doctolib for booking appointments.... and as for blood tests, we just ring the local infirmiére (district nurse) and she comes and empties your arm, and you pay her if necessary... she tells you how much by using your Carte Vitale. After 70, I think all visits are free, the French health service pays.
Glad you are on the mend, I hope.....

  8. Glad to hear that you’ve had some relief and that you were able to get in to see the doctor sooner rather than later. Be well. C.
