Clearing out and cleaning up

Yesterday I showed pictures of the basement in CHM's apartment in Paris. Today, I'll show a little bit of what we had to haul out of our house and take over to the dump, la déchetterie, across the river from us, three or four miles by car. We had to haul several loads of junk over there. The woman who sold us the house was in her 70s at that point. Her husband had died. The house had stood empty for years. They couple in question and used it as big storage area, called un débarras in French. They lived in an apartment in Saint-Aignan. In my experience, in this part of France, houses are rarely "staged" for selling. I think it's usually up to the buyer, not the seller, to do the clean-up and clear-out work.

Another way we got rid of junk that we didn't want was to burn it in the back yard.
You couldn't very well do that in Paris.

  1. I'm so glad you moved while you were relatively young and could accomplish so much hard work. Getting things done as we age isn't the same story. There's a bit of adventure in burning piles of stuff.
