Un accident est si vite arrivé...

I wounded myself with a vegetable peeler yesteday morning. I was trying to peel a big round pear when I lost control of the peeler and sliced off part of the tip of the little finger on my left hand. There was a lot of blood. When it hadn't stopped bleeding after 20 minutes or so, I told Walt I thought it would be a good idea for him to take me to the pharmacy. Maybe somebody there could stop the bleeding and bandage the wound.

And that's what we did. There's no emergency room at the hospital in Saint-Aignan. Mr Martineau, the owner of the pharmacy and a former mayor of Saint-Aignan, got the bleeding stopped after a few minutes, and with the assistance of one of his employees applied an effective bandage. There was no charge for the service. I've been a customer there for nearly 20 years now.

I have managed to type this post, but it hasn't been easy. I may have to curtail my blogging for a few days. This morning I'll need to change the bandage. Walt will help me. Wish us luck.

  1. I feel for you! Last week I was sweeping the path outside my house and the broomstick snapped, nearly taking off the pad on the front of my ring finger. Luckily I was able to get it sealed quickly. I find it useful to have a little can of Elastoplast spray bandage for such items where it is tricky to apply a bandage. I generally throw some antiseptic on and then spray over the wound, and it seals within seconds.

    1. Thanks, Mike. I didn't know about spray bandages. I see Amaazon sells Elastoplast spray.

    2. I injured myself a couple years ago and at the Urgent Care I was expecting a stitch or two but the Dr. used a sealant, too! I will look to buy some for myself, as well. Last night I tried to stab the avocado seed (I saw it online, but I've never done it like I did last night - the knife slid off the seed and jabbed my palm [ EEK]. A bandaid worked but a sealant would have been much better. Thanks, Mike.

  2. So glad it only took a bandage. Cooking is dangerous; that’s why I avoid it.

    1. I hope it starts to heal soon. I’ve cut off tips of my fingers a number of times. (Former graphic artist who had to use X-Acto knives too often, and then just careless with sharp objects.) Not much to be done with nothing to stitch. Just have to avoid infection.

  5. Glad the pharmacy was open and you have a proper bandage now. It's difficult to keep cut fingers dry, hopefully Walt will wash your dishes. Sending healing thoughts to you.

  6. Ooh, ouch! A dreadful surprise when these things happen, and so painful due to all the nerve endings at the tips of our fingers. I'm sure your readers will understand if you can only type short missives for awhile. Take it easy and get well soon!

  9. I'm glad the Elastoplast recommendation resounded with so many. As I said it's a godsend when applying a tape dressing is tricky, notably when fingers are injured! So you quickly wash and disinfect, shake off the excess and then spray to seal the wound (not much needed), and then if necessary apply a protective dressing on top to a fairly dry site. I've used this for years and never had an infection. Touch wood. Ouch splinter...

    1. My wound seems to have stopped gushing blood this morning. I just put on a new bandage. No pain involved.
