The Cher is a fairly slow-flowing river and it's not very deep at Saint-Aignan. There are locks at Saint-Aignan, Mareuil, and Pouillé that used to allow boats and barges to navigate on the Cher. The photo above shows the lock (écluse) and
lockkeeper's house at Mareuil, which has in recent years been rented out as a gîte rural (vacation rental).

The Cher might be a lazy river, but it does flood from time to time. It overflowed in the Saint-Aignan area as recently
as 2016. It also flooded the area in about 20 years ago. We live up a steep hill from the river,
so we don't have to worry much about flooding.

It's an attractive river. I like the dark foliage of the Japanese maples (?) in photo #2.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful river- I didn't know it was so long!
ReplyDeleteIs it the angle of the last two photos or something? But the Cher looks much wider here than it is at Chenonceau.
ReplyDeleteI just did some rough measurements of the width of the Cher from Selles-sur-Cher on down to Chenonceaux. It seems to very from about 65 meters to 80 meters wide. At some points it's as wide as 100 meters or as narrow as 45 meters. I imagine the depth of the river varies as well.
DeleteThat’s interesting. I suppose the speed of the flow varies as well. A river is really a live entity with it’s flora and fauna.
