Taking a wintertime break

I've decided to take a break in January. Don't be surprised if you don't get posts on a daily basis. I'm finding it harder and harder to work with the Blogger software. There isn't enough time in the day to write and format blog posts and keep up with all the other things going on in our lives here in Saint-Aignan.

Besides, while my arthritis is much reduced most days, but I feel like I'm developing carpal tunnel disease because I spend so much time searching for and processing photos to post. My multi-tasking skills are not as sharp as they used to be, and that's frustrating. About the only thing I really enjoy doing is cooking, including shopping and meal planning.

Maybe in the spring, when the weather gets better, I'll start to get out a little more and take more photos. In December and January there's often not enough light for me to enjoy taking photos, and my fingers get really cold when I use the camera I'm afraid of dropping it.

There's a ton of work to do out in the yard, but it's too cold to do much outdoors. I guess we got spoiled by the warm winters of the past five years. At the same time, weather forecasters and meteorologists point out that the temperatures this winter are not really extreme by historical standards. It's just that we're not used to them now.

À bientôt ! Et bonne année !

  1. It’s difficult to keep up the momentum when the weather makes everything hard work. Although it feels right to be having proper winter weather for a change. A break from blogging is a good thing to do.

  2. Hi Ken, I’ll miss you but I can understand what you say, it’s wise to take a break. And here in the Diois we too are having an unusual (for us) winter. A lot of low cloud/fog and today it’s -8! At least the days are getting longer. Look after yourself, enjoy your cooking, and, I hope, the eating. À bientôt.

  4. We are at an age when we need to keep our stress down and look after ourselves. I hope your CT pain lessens with rest as the daylight comes back. Thanks for all the posts you've given us, past and future. Happy New Year to you and Walt.

  5. Happy New Year...I'll miss seeing your posts.....I certainly understand tho...As much as I love to cook I'm struggling with coming up with ideas at this point.... Luckily my husband is happy eating anything but when he says he can have a pbj for dinner that does not in any way appeal to me so I am in need of inspiration..Our 50th anniversary is this saturday & I guess it'll be Chinese take out!!
    Cheers to 2026

  10. I am slowing down too. When you write about the difficulties that you’re experiencing, I get that and I sympathize. I look forward to anything that you are able to post whenever you can. In the meantime, I’m quite happy to see you post about your cooking, baking, daily indoor life, and accomplishments. I always find them so inspiring for my menu planning. No pressure intended. I’ve already written my greetings for 2026 in yesterday’s comments but my main wish for you is the best of health! C.

  11. Happy New Year Ken! I'm sure we will all miss the historic photos you've shared with us - but how about just staying current with the photos? I love whatever you share - it's just like chatting with a friend nearby. When one is stuck with cold, damp and today, foggy weather - everything can give you a "I'm on a decline" modus operandi. We've all been there - especially for me, today. High will only be in the upper 30's. I will catch you on the next post, sooner or later! I found some thumb exercises that I do when I remember - and I haven't had any more arthritic pains so they must be working. (found in NYT)

  15. We, your readers, want the best for you in 2026, Ken. We enjoy your writing, your photos and stories about France, history, and your lives together. We do understand that doing it every day can be a burden. I hope you will write again, as I will miss your writing, but of course it has to be meaningful and satisfying for you. When the spirit moves you, perhaps you can try a different format, as Blogger is getting to be so problematic. Instagram might be fun. Meanwhile, be well and...live long and prosper!

  17. Take your break, if you need it, Ken. However, your blog is -for many years- number 1 on my daily list (with 30 blogs)! Greetz from Perth.
