I've never been able to find out why there is a big B on this house's chimney. I don't know when the house was built, or by whom. The people who live there now moved in just 2 or 3 years ago.
Ken, there will be a "chainage" running through the chimney stack to the main roof timbers of the building.... the B is on the outer end which is often decorated with something meaningful to the owner.... the Steward and Paterson's Brewery in Norfolk had two such chimneys.... one with S and the other with P.
ReplyDeleteThanks Tim. I figured the B stood for somebody's family name. But who was it. Since the house is in the Renaudière hamlet (village), I think the people who had it built were the Rendauds. A family named Denis lived in it for a while, and then it was bought by the Jacquelin family. Finally, new owners whose name starts with T bought it.
DeleteChristian name of someone [wife, child].... maiden surname of wife.... there are enough possibilities to keep you amused.
DeleteWe grow a Jack Dunnet potato, developed in Caithness, but a favourite of the French as it doesn't mind a bit of drought... it is called "Stemster" which is a little town up there... but all his first spud varieties were named after his six daughters, then he moved on to place names from Caithness!!
The naming of things is a strangely psycological affair, I think... look at house and boat names, especially... some are off this planet!!
I love sunrises but seldom see them unlike you and Walt.
