La soupe des chiens à Cheverny

Another of the big attractions at the Château de Cheverny is, or was, the pack of hunting dogs that were kept in the park, and especially their feeding in the afternoon, sometimes called la soupe des chiens. Here are some of my photos from such a feeding on April 1, 2004. And here's a link to a five-minute YouTube video about show the dogs put on at mealtime. They were/are very well trained. Their food was raw chicken carcasses and vegetable-based croquettes (kibble). It was fun to see on a sunny day.

The sign in the picture below says "please don't excite the dogs." I think there were 120 dogs in the pack. You have to watch the video to the end to get the full picture.

  1. Since Covid they no longer do the feeding as a public spectacle. Thank goodness. The pack is kept at 100 adult dogs and 20 puppies. Excess puppies are given away to other hunts.

    1. I don't understand the "thank goodness" comment.

    2. I think what Susan means it was ridiculous to have the feeding of the dogs as a public spectacle. So that’s over, “thank goodness”. That’s the way I feel, too!

  2. Man's best friend. They look so healthy- the old ones must be in a retirement village somewhere.

    1. They are located in the village called Villentrois, just east of Saint-Aignan. Do you know Vincent Roussely in Angé?

    2. Only by reading up, sounds like Clos Roussely has some interesting wines, made in the natural way. I’ll see if anyone will ship to Oklahoma. Have you tried any?

  4. Oh my goodness. OH MY GOODNESS. I have seen that feeding frenzy before, but this video that you're showing, gives the extra perspective of the food being dumped out of the wheel barrow (or whatever we'd call that). It cracks me up how the dogs are all on top of each other. Do you think that they get this worked up just from not eating since one day before? It's amazing, if a bit unsettling.

Speaking of COVID (as Susan mentioned it)... I have it. I feel pretty crappy. Taking PAXLOVID (and tolerating that just fine), and cough medicine, and hoping I feel better soon (and, I'm all vaccinated and boosted up, including the latest booster, the bivalent one against Omicron... you two have had that one, right? Get it, if you haven't. Mine was in October, so it has been a while, but I'm sure I'd be realllllly sick, without it). My husband had it first, and wasn't nearly as sick as I feel.

    1. Sorry to hear this, Judy. Hope you feel better very soon. I don't think Walt and I have had the Omicron booster. I'll have to ask about it at the pharmacy.

  5. Hope you recover fast from it.
