Another year, another storm

I got a cryptic message from my sister this morning. As I've mentioned before, she and our closest cousin do volunteer work at a food mission in our home town, Morehead City in North Carolina. Here's the text of the message:

“Stuck at mission. Water almost to building.”

She sent it at 6:53 p.m. yesterday. It's true that the building the mission operates out of is on very low ground on the edge of a bay. I feel sure there was no imminent danger, because the eye of Hurricane Ian ended up making landfall yesterday afternoon 280 kilometers (175 miles) to the southwest, on the South Carolina coast. I'm waiting for more news.

I took this picture of storm clouds approaching Morehead from the southwest in October 2006.

  1. We are all ok here. water almost surrounded the mission but never made it in he building. We were stuck because it is salt water and we didn't want to drive in it. noone could get in for food unless they had Knee high boots.

    1. I figured you were okay. I imagine the water didn't stay high for too long.

  2. Have you heard from your friend in Naples? The devastation in Punta Gorda, Ft Myers and Naples is mind boggling. My area in central Florida got only tropical storm conditions.

    1. Haven't heard from the Naples friend. Her house is on a canal, so I wonder about flooding.

  3. Those hurricanes are really destroying machines! Glad your sister is safe and the mission is dry. Can they sleep there waiting for the water to recede?
