One day I want to go over to the Saint-Aignan train station, just three or four miles from our house, and take to train to Bourges, a small city with a long history. The ride takes an hour. I've been there before, but I've never spent enough time wandering around in the town's historic district, where there's a fantastic cathedral.

If you take the same train in the opposite direction from Saint-Aignan, you end up in the bigger city of Tours, and that ride also takes an hour. Above is a photo of the train that links us to Bourges and Tours, both of which are worth a visit. The train is a TER, un Train Express Régional.

  1. Go and explore. There is something different about arriving in a city by train, and the ride there and back is a part of the adventure.

  2. I agree with what Travel said! You won't have to worry about finding a parking space either.

  3. What a fine idea! Do it! I love train travel, especially on French trains, but you already know that. -- Chrissoup

  4. I've never been to Bourges. It's nice to have those options in either direction where you live. We have really no train options on the West Coast.

    1. Our friend Sue lives in the Sierra foothills not very far from Sacramento. Last week, she and some friends of hers took the train from near her house over the mountains to Reno, Nevada, just for fun. they were hoping to see a lot of snow when they planned the trip, but then the weather turned hot and all the snow melted. Still, she says it was fun to spend two or three days in Reno. Next month, she will be taking the train from the Sacto area to San Francisco to see an old friend who lives in Charleston SC but who'll be visiting SF for a few days. They haven't see each other in 50 years.

    3. That sounds nice! Seems like they have better train options in Northern California than in Southern, glad to know that.
