Décembre 2005 (2)

Here are some more photos I took around our yard and the vineyard outside Saint-Aignan in December 2005. Collard leaves touched by frost are tender and tasty.

The cat just came back into the house. He wasn't out long but he was soaking wet. I guess it's raining out there this morning.

At 13.6ºC (56ºF), it's not very cold. It's almost warm, in fact, given the date and the hour.

According to Accuweather, it's –21ºC (–6ºF) right now in Urbana, Illinois, where I lived for five or six years as a young man.

According to the Télématin weather woman yesterday, we can expect temperatures here in northern France to plummet in a few days. I guess the cold air will be coming across the Atlantic.

  1. Morning Ken....
"The cat just came back into the house. He wasn't out long but he was soaking wet. I guess it's raining out there this morning"
Wonderful "rain gauges" aren't they..... ours is wanting to go out.... I open the door and he looks, hears the rain hammering on the hangar's tin roof and shrinks back.... he won't even go and play in the barn!!
However, do you use Meteo60's radar view of the rain [https://www.meteo60.fr/radars-precipitations-pluie-france.php].... updated every 15mins... as I type, you are coming to the end of a not-raining gap.... but it is just a gap.... rain for the rest of the day!!
I will have to go out in it.... need carrots.... can't Christmas properly without glazed carrots.... might get some more "Brassin de Noël" [Grimbergen beer] as it is rather good this year.... wondering if they've changed the recipe or if I've forgotten how nice it is.... didn't find any last year, so probably the latter.
    Have a good day!

  2. I use Accuweather for hourly forecasts and especially for the radar. See this.

  3. Oh, those are such nice photos, with the touches of frost. Very nice!
Our temps are like those in Champaign/Urbana... it's -5° F here, and won't get to 1° until the afternoon.

  4. Just spoke to one of my sisters who lives about 12 miles east of Champaign/Urbana where the temperature was -8 F. A so-called polar bomb dropped into the Midwest yesterday, and we're now experiencing as part of that storm torrential rain and high winds in the Boston area. It's 56 F right now but expected to drop to 12 F overnight. That will bring frozen conditions that are quite dangerous, i.e., the infamous black ice that makes roads and sidewalks treacherous.

Best wishes to you and Walt for a safe, healthy New Year.

    1. I remember when the temperature in Champaign-Urbana went down to negative 25F in the late '70s. My car's oil filter froze and burst. A group of us from the French Department walked to the White Horse Inn on Green Street because it had a roaring fire in it's big fireplace. We spent much of the afternoon there. I also remember that on and around the U of I campus it would snow. The snow would get soft when the temperature rose a little. People's footprints and bicycle and car tire tracks would then freeze as the temperature dropped overnight, and the footprints and tire tracks would freeze as ruts that made walking really treacherous. If all that didn't thaw completely before the next snow fell, all the ruts and 'prints were covered over and no longer visible. A lot of people would fall every winter because of such ice and suffer broken bones (Barbara Bowen was one of them).

  7. Oui, verglas (black ice) here so we are all inside waiting for the warm up - mostly last night 19 deg F. I, too, love those frosty pics, Ken! And, yes, my glasses fog up when I walk inside the stores with my mask on. I hate it, but I hate getting sick, worse! Should get up to 44 later today and 60 on Christmas day - so no complaints from me. Several cancellations - dinner party last night is postponned until next week (darn!) and my friend flying out to New Zealand from Portland was undoubtedly delayed (I haven't called - I'll find out eventually).

Merry Christmas to you and Walt and all the readers of this blog! It feels like a 'family' to me!

  8. It's down to 64 here in Los Angeles. I'll have to unpack my full length mink coat. Wait...I don't have a mink coat. Anyway, it's 24 degrees in my home town of Dallas. Hope everyone stays safe and warm.
